Red Faction demo released

Good job Volition for not supporting 2000/XP. I downloaded the demo and it just crashed back to windows without any sort of error message. I think it's probably an Athlon bug they have (because someone with a 1.4 TB + Win98 had a problem as well), but they'd probably be gay and not give me any answers because I'm using XP.

Stupid publishers... I was looking forward to this game and was probably gonna buy it, but now it seems like I'll just have to ignore it.

Sigh.

Fun demo. Looks and sounds great, plays very well (with one caveat: mouse control didn't seem very precise). Driving the sub is a blast. Blowing up walls is a blast. Even the political subtext of revolt works pretty well, lending the whole affair more urgency than the hokey-assed cliched sci-fi experiment gone wrong at the center of Half-Life and a million other games.

So far, so good. Bring on the game.

This pisses me off.

First...I download the demo, and try to run it on my main system....
(Specs) T-bird 1.4, 512 ram, Geforce2Mx, soundblaster 5.1 platinum, Win98se,DX 8.1
It didnt run.

Second I transfer it to my old system
(Specs) PIII 500, 128 ram, Rage 128, Crystal audio, Win98se, DX8.1
Ran fine....no problems.....

Demo was awesome btw, I loved it......think this will be a must buy for me when it comes out....

But anyways, just thought i would bitch....

This Q2 lookalike peice of trash is what have you all wound up so tight? It's horribly ugly, low-poly, and features the most midlessly simple point-and-click combat anywhere. If you couldn't blow holes in the wall, would you psychophant fanboys still love this game so much?

Red Faction is not supported under Windows 2000. You may ecounter problems while playing Red Faction in this operating system. THQ/Volition is unable to provide support for these problems.

Well, its unfortunate that the demo just HAD to be released on the day all the id stuff goes down at QuakeCon. The demo is quite cool. From a graphics standpoint my first impression was 'meh', as its overall visuals fall somewhere between Half-Life and Quake3 - decent texturing but quite low poly detail. The sound is nicely done, crisp, clean, well sampled. Weapons are cool. Dig the machine gun. The infrared on the rocket launcher is WAY cool.

The geomod strikes me as being pretty badass. It just works. Its pretty wild to be able to tunnel long, deeeeeep holes into the ground that you can walk through. Now granted you cant tunnel anywhere or anything as that would seriously fuck up gameflow but still I was running around quite contendly destroying walls, structures, making holes in the ground, drilling tunnels, etc. I can imagine that if some quality editing tools are released mappers could have a field day.

I especially think the engine is going to make a GREAT foundation for Volition to improve upon (if they're smart. Increase the level poly counts, model poly counts, add a more robust animation system and add a few more eye candy effects and the Geomod engine could be state of the art.

Volition has earned themselves a sale from me.

Holy shit! This game is fucking BADASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best part of this game is the "Extras", namely a level where you get to try out the GeoMod stuff with unlimited ammo. Breaking down walls and digging holes is kinda fun.

The game itself is really dull. Its just like any other FPS you've played with dumber AIs and low poly models.

It doesn't work under XP for me; it just crashes to the desktop. I took a chance that it might not suck and booted into 98. In my opinion it was worth it. The demo is a lot of fun, and I'm definitely going to pick up the full game when it comes out next month. Volition has never disappointed me.

Hey, WTF happened to Prey anyway? Are they still planning on bringing it out? I remember seeing those screenshots of an apartment or something. They probably look like crap compared to the new Unreal tech anyway...

dammit i want this demo... why the hell would volition and thq release this demo of their premier game to some slow-as-hell polish server?

From what it sounds like they've managed to kill the neato factor of the deformable levels by only allowing it in certain spots. What the hell is the point of dynamicaly deformable levels if you can only do it in a few pre-set spots? I'm not even going to bother with this, the idea of being able to blow away anything in a level was the only thing that made this game stand out.

Alright, this story has been out for nearly 6 hours and there are STILL no decent mirrors. WTF?

Has anyone tried the demo yet? Is it worth downloading?
