Covad To File For Bankruptcy

I just signed up for Speakeasy yesterday, since Qwest can't figure out how to get me connected.

What a bunch of bullshit. I don't want to get @Home, dammit.

Well, that settles it; DSL in the United States has become irreversibly tainted. The last provider willing to give residential customers a static IP adress is about to declare bankruptcy. The baby bells will start pushing their inferior service, milking the golden media cow like never before. Small businesses will only have three choices for setting up a webserver's pipeline: frame-relay, T1, or (god forbid) ISDN.

And the cable industry isn't getting any better either; AT&T wants all residential customers to use @Home. Microsoft wants to buy AT&T's cable operations and turn it into a sprawling broadband incarnation of MSN. AOL wants to buy it and proprietarize it as well.

What the hell am I going to do once I get out of college? The baby bells suck, and the cable companies perform contractual arm-twisting before letting you see the capabilities of their service. The government better step in on this one, or the only viable solution for me will be a T1 line, or living at work 24/7.

Sooner or later, we will be left with one vast highspeed provider.

And then watch the Internet come under the heel of the right wing!

What happened the new economy

Do all of the Bells cap their DSL service upload rate at 128K? That's about what mine seems to be at despite the fact that my downrate is around 1.5mbps

What does @Home cap their upload rates at?

I am about to move. Earthlink said I can get DSL. Sprint ION says I can get it. I bet they both use Covad.

Well hurray. Just got my DSL from earthlink (through Covad) working two days ago. Now I'm going to lose it (for the second time). This just makes me feel jolly.

I don't know how any of these companies thought they were gonna make money when they had to pay the phone companies.

Never ever try to out duel a phone company, you never win.

My DSL ISP is folding at end of Sept. *sniff* I agree it is getting harder to find static DSL providers. Most are changing that to a "business" class of feature so my cost would jump about $70 from my current ISP. blah

SprintION looks interesting ... but it is in the same financial troubled boat. :/

I work for a company that offers DSL. All of the network equipment is owned by the phone company. We have more broadband clients than they do :P

Now I don't feel so bad.

So is it Chapter 11 or Chapter 7?
