Quake1 Reborn

(Reposting for the morning crowd) I must have rewritten this sentence a dozen times and I just don't know how else to put this eloquently. Valve Software's in-house internet mod support team has gotten permission from id Software to port Quake to Half-Life and they have done so. It's looking just about complete and will be released "very soon".

Well they didn't bring over the entire game. It's just deathmatch and only the 'classic' maps that were played so much when Quake was at the top of the heap. The maps that are included in DMC are nearly play and look identical to the originals. The maps that will be included in the first release are:
DM2 - Claustrophobopolis      [also a snapshot from original]
DM3 [2] - The Abandoned Base      [also a snapshot from original]
DM4 - The Bad Place      [also a snapshot from original]
DM6 - The Dark Zone      [also a snapshot from original]
E1M2 - Castle Of The Damned      [also a snapshot from original]

  • my take:

i can't wait to own all the newbs. if it's 97% accurate as Steve says, count me in. Nothing is more adrenaline-pumping than Q1Dm, nothing. No arguing.

If this (free) mod can actually get people playing on DM6 in high numbers once again, and servers propagate near me, etc...and if it lets me relive the glory days without fear of cheaters, well, then I for one, am excited as hell.

also, how does the HL engine look about 100x more FUGLY than glQuake?

    glQuake+high polygon counts+shaders+bump mapping= prettiest engine imagineable.

  • This looks cool...I just wish it was DOOM2 with Q1 levels instead (okay...I miss my SSG). Q1's SSG was my only gripe about it (kinda the same way Q1'ers felt about Q2's lousy RL...'cept ten times worse). I really loved Q1's physics and I'm curious...anybody know if this is more QW or NQ style? If HL did 32bit color and fog, we wouldn't have a second thought about doing DemonWars for it (the mod I'm working on right now...still deciding on what game to do it for). Q1 was probably the second best "traditional" deathmatch...I still prefer DOOM2 deathmatch (albeit with exception to it's technology)...it had better weapons.

  • since this is a repost I'm gonna repost this:

Here's my take on all this. Do with it what you may:

For those of you that are complaining that Valve "owes you" for the game, all I can say is that they don't owe you squat. You payed them money for Half-Life, and you got what you paid for, and then some. After that transaction, they owe you nothing. If they were to file bankruptcy, you wouldn't be considered a shareholder.

For those of you that are complaining that Valve needs to start focusing on retail products and that you're afraid that when TF2 and Half-Life2 come out there won't be an interest...well...you know you're crazy. Valve could stop talking to anyone for 5 years and then release a title and if it is good nobody will care how long it had been in development. The game will ultimately be judged on it's final quality. I don't think I ever saw any reviews for half-life saying it was a bad title because it took a long time to make.

The only reason I can think that you'd say something like this is because you are impatient. You are a fan, and you want the game, and you'll say anything you can to get the game to you as fast as possible. I know this because sometimes I think this. The only difference is that I feel like I have enough common sense to know that posting it will do nothing and gain no ground. I suck it up and play something else.

For those of you that are anticipating this, rock on. I'm looking forward to it a bit myself.

I'm not losing any sleep worrying about how Valve is running their business. I'm sure Gabe & Co. have everything well in hand.
