Quake1 Reborn
by Steve Gibson, Jun 06, 2001 6:09am PDT(Reposting for the morning crowd) I must have rewritten this sentence a dozen times and I just don't know how else to put this eloquently. Valve Software's in-house internet mod support team has gotten permission from id Software to port Quake to Half-Life and they have done so. It's looking just about complete and will be released "very soon".
Well they didn't bring over the entire game. It's just deathmatch and only the 'classic' maps that were played so much when Quake was at the top of the heap. The maps that are included in DMC are nearly play and look identical to the originals. The maps that will be included in the first release are:
DM2 - Claustrophobopolis [also a snapshot from original] DM3 [2] - The Abandoned Base [also a snapshot from original] DM4 - The Bad Place [also a snapshot from original] DM6 - The Dark Zone [also a snapshot from original] E1M2 - Castle Of The Damned [also a snapshot from original]

Ummm... how about I just install Quake 1, and play Quake 1 DM maps at an amazing frame rate. Better yet, if I want the levels prettier, how about I download one of MANY Q1 DM ported maps for Quake 3? This gets me just about as excited as an announcement that Pamela Anderson would once again appear NAKED somewhere. Which is to say, it wouldn't excite me at all.
New product please.

Wont have the same feel as QW, but damn close I hope
this has to be the WORST thing valve could ever do.
- q1 netcode (q2 and q3, too) ROX0RED.
what's one of the many reasons cs sucks?
oh yeah, hl netcode.
- i liked sin better than hl.
from the engine.
so why port it THE WRONG WAY???
- a cs to q3 mod would have motherfucking ROCKED, but this is just plain stupid.
- the only reason they do this is $$$
all the hardcore-quakers and id-fans who haven't bought hl yet (it sucks, remember?), will be forced to do it now.
- a QUAKE SYMBOL (quad) A HL ICON ??????????
WTF ARE YOU ASSHOLES THINKING ?!?!?!?!
oh yeah, and i see the BIG thing still being unannounced: the new (uber stylish hl-advertising) hi-res models will only work with blue shift...

ID software must be laughing their ass off..
Win/win for them, baby. Valve is the one that gets shat on. See thread below for details.

i can't wait to own all the newbs. if it's 97% accurate as Steve says, count me in. Nothing is more adrenaline-pumping than Q1Dm, nothing. No arguing.
If this (free) mod can actually get people playing on DM6 in high numbers once again, and servers propagate near me, etc...and if it lets me relive the glory days without fear of cheaters, well, then I for one, am excited as hell.
also, how does the HL engine look about 100x more FUGLY than glQuake?
glQuake+high polygon counts+shaders+bump mapping= prettiest engine imagineable.

The final proof that engine for modified engine, Half-life does not even cut it compared to Quake....TBH I am surprised that this was the best they could do, 5 years after Quake and 2 1/2 years after HL. Amazing...
BTW 215 and everyone else, I still play Quake single player all the time, and run the premier resource for single player levels: http://www.planetquake.com/teamshambler - believe me, people are making amazing maps, better than almost all other games, and way beyond this crap...

Here's my take on all this. Do with it what you may:
For those of you that are complaining that Valve "owes you" for the game, all I can say is that they don't owe you squat. You payed them money for Half-Life, and you got what you paid for, and then some. After that transaction, they owe you nothing. If they were to file bankruptcy, you wouldn't be considered a shareholder.
For those of you that are complaining that Valve needs to start focusing on retail products and that you're afraid that when TF2 and Half-Life2 come out there won't be an interest...well...you know you're crazy. Valve could stop talking to anyone for 5 years and then release a title and if it is good nobody will care how long it had been in development. The game will ultimately be judged on it's final quality. I don't think I ever saw any reviews for half-life saying it was a bad title because it took a long time to make.
The only reason I can think that you'd say something like this is because you are impatient. You are a fan, and you want the game, and you'll say anything you can to get the game to you as fast as possible. I know this because sometimes I think this. The only difference is that I feel like I have enough common sense to know that posting it will do nothing and gain no ground. I suck it up and play something else.
For those of you that are anticipating this, rock on. I'm looking forward to it a bit myself.
I'm not losing any sleep worrying about how Valve is running their business. I'm sure Gabe & Co. have everything well in hand.

It would have been nice to see an "Old Sk3wl" Quake mod for Quake3.

"Not all of Valve's time is spent on "the next best thing" for Half-Life. For the past several months, Valve has been working on three totally unique "modifications" if you will, for Half-Life. We're going to unveil the first today."
I hope the next 2 mods are more exciting then this, Q1 deathmatch, Although I am looking foward to E1m2. :)
I'm praying these other mods arent ghey, like Halflife Soccer or some shit.

oh please someone . . .
I think it's cool that they are taking the time to redo the Q1 levels and bring them to a viable game that is right now at the top of the game heap.
especially doing something that a lot of people wanted done a while ago, kinda like DUke Q3 or whatever it was. But now it's an Official Ok from the man to reproduce these maps. It also gives H-L more longevity
The next release of the SDK, which will be version 2.2, will contain all of the source code for Deathmatch Classic. We'll be releasing the SDK in about 2 weeks. It will be interesting to see what kinds of games people make based off DMC.

HEY THAT MEANS SOMEONE CAN MAKE A 100% QUAKE PORT FOR HALFLIFE! Sweet! :)
