Valve's DMC Announced
by Steve Gibson, Jun 05, 2001 9:59pm PDTI must have rewritten this sentence a dozen times and I just don't know how else to put this eloquently. Valve Software's in-house internet mod support team has gotten permission from id Software to port Quake to Half-Life and they have done so. It's looking just about complete and will be released "very soon".
Well they didn't bring over the entire game. It's just deathmatch and only the 'classic' maps that were played so much when Quake was at the top of the heap. The maps that are included in DMC play and look nearly identical to the originals. The maps that will be included in the first release are:
Exclusive? Yeah well it looks like there was a little bit of miscommunication in the PR department at Valve.
DM2 - Claustrophobopolis [also a snapshot from original] DM3 [2] - The Abandoned Base [also a snapshot from original] DM4 - The Bad Place [also a snapshot from original] DM6 - The Dark Zone [also a snapshot from original] E1M2 - Castle Of The Damned [also a snapshot from original]

shitty.
no offense, but the HL engine is just not a DM engine...
Counter Strike runs so well because the MOD is slow in general. When it comes down to simple deathmatch, the engine just *doesn't* feel right.
=\
just my 2cents.

The halflife engine is home to the fastest internet deathmatch game on the market now. Yes, I speak the truth. Half Life Deathmatch is faster than any deathmatch game out now. Try it...watch a demo if you don't believe me.

Although the speed of the engine isn't experienced to a newbie who is just messing around, its defintely evident once you pick up the gauss gun and get up some bunnyhop accel speed. Or try longjumping into a gauss jump... Definitely faster than q3,

I don't want stinking Death Match Classic, or Team Fortress Classic, or any other rehash pet project. I don't want them to swallow up any more indy teams just so they can release their work in a retail box, and call it theirs. (CS, Gunman)
The only thing Classic about any of those is how Valve hides behind them. Classic Microsoft style. They used up the only original thinking brain cells in their heads and now must put out been-there-done-that games.
TF2, where is it!?
End of story.
Thanks.

right !>!>!
YOU CAN FIND IT HERE. http://www.shacknews.com/extras/e_dmc/
HERE ARE THE MAJOR POINTS:
- The physics are exactly the same as Quake 1
- All damage, items, weapons, maps, player movement, air movement, and weapon placements are exactly the same as Quake 1
- This project has id Software's blessing.
- This is better than Q1 because of the graphics, the large community, in-game browser, and the HL Netcode.
- The MOD Support team made this. Not the HL2 team or the TF2 team. This did not take away from other projects

What a dumb mod. The Half-Life engine sucks by now anyway.
Why would anyone be interested in this?

Oh yeah, lets not hurry up and finish our old games or make new ones
We can just shove out ANOTHER version of HL this time to a console.
Thank god they at least decided to get USB mouse support...
*yawn*
Back to Tribes 2.
Well, I may play this once in a while. I loved Q1 DM (who didn't?), and this may provide some entertainment.
Quake 1 was fun, if I want to play Q1 I simply whip out my Q1 CD and play
The graphics here at least so far aren't a HUGE leap over the Q1 shots. I just don't understand why they are wasting their time on this project, something we've all already played before, when they SHOULD be trying to come up with new ideas

However, there was something extremely magical about Doom 1/2, and Quake 1. I could play those games for hours and hours -- their weapons rocked and the maps were very well done. Now, it's all been-there-done-that. "Oh, another team fortress spin-off...?" "Hmm, isn't this capture the flag with a slight twist?" "Ah yes, deathmatch."
I guess the next signficant step in FPS will be when the graphics are photo-realistic... to the point where it looks like you're looking out of a view finder of a camera in a real-life war... or where you feel you've joined into an actual movie such as Aliens, Terminator, etc... no difference between what you see on the movie screen now and what you're interactively playing on your PC and seeing on your monitor... even then, you'll still have deathmatch, team fortress, and capture-the-flag to choose from...
I wish Valve would work on something NEW...but I guess I'll play this every now and again for shits and giggles.

While my guess was wrong for tonight, it will be interesting to see if it comes true at a tournament in the near future:

Quake redone in a more modern engine would likely have a lot of appeal to some people, much like drag racing classic cars.

To me, this is just another attempt by Valve to drag their trophy horse through the ringer, and milk it for all its got.
The recent updates in netcode, textures, etc. are basically "sooping up" an older engine.
While better engies come out, Half-life still struggles to compete, even tho inferior in almost every way.
This latest attempt shocks me, as it (the half life engine) is further digressing to an older game. One would assume that the half life engine might run a little faster because it has to do less (quake isn't as complex as half life), yet i find it hard to believe.
I've been a fan of every type of id-deathmatch since the begining, and I am rather skeptical about this mod.
Thats just my opinion,
whether or not it holds true will be determined.
i just don't want to hear the words "i told you so".

HL blew me away the week that I brought it home.. But cmon....... This is really whipping a dead horse now.
How much faith does Valve have left in this game? It ran out of steam a while back.

i just wanna know when Half-Life: The Headcrab Missions is coming out. =\
Only ultimate hits are worth to be cloned by another companies. Perhaps id Software is kind of proud. Valve indirectly admits that HL can't match Quake DM and thats surprising.
Quake lives
