Fragtopia has posted a possible solution for the Red Jack/Lag problem that people experience in Tribes2. It involves soundcard settings. Thanks Erik.

  • Well, I'm using a SB Live and have nary a problem. I'm stuck on 56k dialup (no broadband in this damn rural town) and the game is very playable with little lag. One thing I think eliminates problems with the SB Live in general is I install the drivers ONLY and none of the fancy schmancy audio effects or other bloatware.

Sure, you might ask why bother with a $50 sound card if I run it at 8bit 11hz in two channel stereo, but then again, I've never had an issue with it. Also, I just upgraded from a p2-400 and have never had the horsepower to run games at playable framerates with all the 3D sound effects on. Now that I do have the horsepower, I don't bother.

    My two cents.

    System:

    256mb pc133
    TNT2U
    SB Live Value

  • This all makes me laugh; the redjacks were caused by sound code problems?! And Tribes2 uses the Miles Sound System (also used in Daikatana and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force), so it's Dynamix's fault for screwing up their DirectSound and EAX implementation. There should be absolutely NO reason why you have to put the acceleration slider down to "Good" to play a game that was released for retail. No excuses whatsoever. After all, they had a REALLY long beta test period.

I can already see Dynamix whining about their not-so-diverse beta testing hardware, but this is on an SBLive, for crying out loud. It's only THE most popular sound card on the market; you'd think that it would run Tribes2 the best.
