Sure, you might ask why bother with a $50 sound card if I run it at 8bit 11hz in two channel stereo, but then again, I've never had an issue with it. Also, I just upgraded from a p2-400 and have never had the horsepower to run games at playable framerates with all the 3D sound effects on. Now that I do have the horsepower, I don't bother.
My two cents.

If you want some action packed, in-depth fps experience you pick up Tribes2. It will run like ass but when its running right its tight.

I can already see Dynamix whining about their not-so-diverse beta testing hardware, but this is on an SBLive, for crying out loud. It's only THE most popular sound card on the market; you'd think that it would run Tribes2 the best.
IANAT2P (I am not a Tribes2 player), but I asked this before, and now I know the answer.
