Metroid FPS!
by Steve Gibson, Feb 17, 2001 6:04am PSTJust about all the oldschool gamers out there remember Metroid and Super Metroid and are probably eagerly anticipating the next Metroid title that is currently being worked on for the Nintendo GameCube. Well some pretty big news, according to IGN the game is going to be a FPS title, with a possible 3rd person view toggle.
Metroid is the game that started it all for me, I'm dying for this game. I really cant see how the game playing as a FPS will really retain much of the feel or theme of the previous games but damn I still want it.

how many of you have actually seen the game yet? zero. and they haven't exactly released a motherlode of shots yet, besides those released before this announcement. almost no information is known, except that it will be an FPS. i can understand being cynical about it. i mean, admittedly, i was a little disappointed with the way Zelda64 turned out. (lots of good, lots of bad, too short) but they're not TRYING to make bad games. they've been pretty good with their games in the past. Nintendo made the games that kept N64 alive.
the system isn't out yet. we know almost nothing about the game. but we've already got idiots like #15 and #367 who already think they're the all-knowing zenmasters of consoles and games that haven't even been released yet. let's give it a chance, alright?

you are all GUESSING as to how this game is going to be.
as a matter of fact, you're also GUESSING as to how this game is going to be on a system that's not even OUT YET.
this has been a reality check. brought to you by [crow].

I personally LOVE Super Metroid and i think this game wont be able to convey the atmosphere of the older games in a 1st person view. im not saying this game wont be fun but i am saying it wont be Metroid. O well, what can one screwball do eh?

*cough*
FPS games are becoming old now, just like side-scollers/platform games got old 6 years ago. Its going to be some lame Doom/Quake/Unreal/Misc FPS ripoff dumbed down to let little kiddies play it, just like 99.99999% of the Nintendo64 games.
I would like to see a new Metroid kinda like how they did Castlevania: SOTN for PSX. A really really big map with lots of different stuff in it. Not some lame FPS with Samus running around collecting keys or hitting buttons to open doors.

....FPS's are getting tired, and it doesn't make sense to go back to scrollers... so what's "next"? :)

In Mario 64, I had to worry about my heading in 360 degrees, my camera, and what I had to find. In Mario 3 all I needed to worry about was getting to the edge of the screen. It was much simpler.
I've stopped playing Counterstrike and a lot of other games because they're too complex to be relaxing for me. I don't want to have to track my money, where everyone is by sound cues, what weapon I have vs. which one I can pick up, how many flashbangs I have, IF I even bought flashbangs, etc. In Age of Empires II I'm sweating through the whole game. It's really stressful.
Games aren't fun to play anymore, in a lot of cases.

Now this ruins the whole Metroid concept. While I agree that third person platform shooters are harder to control that first person shooter, it does destory a large part of the fun of the games. Shamus had upgrades for armor and different attacks that are all losted with it going to fps. Also playing a fps with a controler is no fun.
Over all while this isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, Nintendo did lose customers who were going to by the gamecube just because of Metroid.

I just hope they'll make a good 2D Metroid game for Game Boy Advance.
Besides, where in the plot is there room for a sequel? In II, Samus wiped the Metroids off the face of their home planet except for one, which died at the end of Super. So......?

"...originally (Metroid) began its life as a third-person game. Interestingly though, product evaluators at Nintendo were allegedly not overly impressed with the direction Metroid was headed in and forced a change of genre to first-person shooter..."
Reads:
"These guys don't know how to make good third-person game. Lets see, they've got people well experienced in FPS type of games. Hmmm.... Do it FPS style then"
This is just fucking sad.

"with a possible 3rd person view toggle."
haven't i been screaming this since the trend of 3rd person games came out?
jesus, like it's that hard to bind a key that moves the camera both back and out, AND makes the crosshair disappear at the same time?
grr.. i was hoping no one would catch on long enough for me to get into the business and introduce it myself.

Thankgod I still have my NES and SNES. Fuck emu too... the emulators still haven't gotten it exactly right. The NES ones are getting close, but no cigar yet.
