Sega Scraps Dreamcast

It's official now, Sega is indeed abandoning the Dreamcast in March, instead offering its technology to others and providing content for other systems, although Sega will continue to provide software for the console. However, while we were expecting just the announcements for Playstation 2, Gameboy Advance or Gamecube (and Xbox perhaps) titles, Sega announces Palm support as well saying they will develop game content for the Palm handhelds by the end of the year. These games can be played online, no other details were given. Here is a Reuters story on the announcement.

I own every Nintendo system (except for Virtual Boy...), but my Dreamcast was the first non-Big N system I owned. I preordered it. I danced with glee when I finally picked it up from Kay B Toys. I spent hours playing all of the best games for it (OMG, THPS is so good, I bought THPS 2 for myself as a birthday present). This summer while I was on vacation in Vermont without my computer, I used my DC to go online and write email and stuff.

And now, my baby is dead. At least they'll still make games for it, and Sega will live on through my Game Cube.

  • Yes yes the old sega has screwed me again excuse...

Um since when was the segacd, gamegear, and saturn a flop? Because of sells? From a business standpoint yes, but from a gamers point of view? No way those systems did rock and they had good games.

I wont get into the 32x, that WAS A flop.

Anyway, I held off on the DC because I was peeved over the saturn/32x thing. Plus back then and still today I HATE the controller.

Same thing for the PS2 there are times I would have sold my soul for one but I knew I would wait for some really good games I enjoy.

Sega is following tradition saying they will continue to support the dying system, but past results have proved otherwise ;-)

*is still gonna buy his own DC for PSO*

  • The DC has till Xmas '01 to live.

When the Xbox and GameCube and GBA come out the DC's shelf space will disappear and then it's good bye DC. Gee I hate to say it, but despite having a base of 5.5 million units out there we still have a Saturn situation. Screw you Sega, you let me down again.

Sad but true. At least they can't screw me over in the next gen, they won't have a machine!

I just hope they release Shenmue 2 and 3 for DC. 2 is a sure thing (it's done already), but they might shaft their DC base and release 3 for PS2 only, or something stupid like that.

    CRAPPPYYYY.
