Presidential Scandal
by Steve Gibson, Nov 09, 2000 3:32am PSTAh yes, this is where its gonna start getting ugly. As most people know by now the US presidential election is currently in limbo awaiting a re-count in Florida. Well it looks like 19,000 votes got disqualified because of a 'faulty ballot'. On top of that, 3 lawsuits have been filed in federal court by voters who were deprived of their voting rights due to the allegedly confusing ballots. Oh thats not all, get this:
The NAACP has asked the Justice Department to investigate alleged voting irregularities involving minorities in Florida. [...] At least 50 people went door to door Wednesday in Palm Beach County, asking residents to sign a petition for a new presidential election.Somehow I think no matter what happens, half the country is gonna be pissed off. Nothing like a presidential scandal when we havent even decided on the president yet.

And another thing, why are we still using a century-old electoral voting scheme? It simply doesn't make sense. Popular vote, majority wins. Pretty simple, and effective. One reason why "political science" is an oxymoron.

Millions of other people throughout the USA have used a ballot similar to the one in Palm Beach, and we don't hear complaints from them. Most likely because they aren't stupid enough to vote for the wrong guy. Yes, it sucks that the ballot confused people, but then so does the English language, walking, talking, eating...
The ballot should be changed to suit the needs of these less than intelligent voters, so that this stink doesn't happen next time. However, by law, there can be no re-vote. Face it: Dubya has won, and is our prez elect. Don't look at me though... I didn't vote for him. I know better than to vote for a Republocrat. I voted Libertarian.
Crying stupidity, so that you can give your favorite guy a second chance is pathetic.

Even Lower Line: If you elected a DEAD man to be your governor you are also an idot.
Hell: so, the dead man's wife will now be the governor; if Hilary clinton becomes president in 2004 and dies, does Bill Get to be president again using American Democrat logic?

Florida's corruption needed to be exposed, again, as it last was two years ago when Miami's mayor was found to have been elected by dead people (and the court nullified the election).
It's good for the nation to know that, just as in the 19th and even through the mid 20th century, parts of our political system are still riddled with sham and fix. And it's important to reform that lousy system as much as humanly possible -- and to understand that its repair is an ongoing project. American electoral politics is like...well...like Microsoft Windows: can you say c-r-a-s-h? :)
Corruption, of course, isn't a Republican monopoly. It just so happens that this time they're caught with their pants down. The Bush dynasty may not survive this one -- but don't weep for the boys, they'll go back to screwing the public in private life. I hear oil's a good business to be in this winter.
If, somehow, Dubya miraculously survives the cloud of deception, fraud, and civil liberties violations hanging over his rigged win in Florida, he'll be a crippled president from Day One. Half the nation will forever doubt the election's legitimacy -- and that means his ridiculous agenda (everything from the "faith-based" office in the White House to his social security gambling scheme) is dead on arrival.
He can then spend four years mispronouncing words he doesn't know, travel the country to boos and hisses and bitter distrust, amuse world leaders who will find him a silly child at best, hop when his wealthy masters tell him to hop, and that will be that. At the end of it he'll look and feel like an 80-year old man. And he'll deserve it. :)

did everyone further know that in 1996 there were 16000 disqualified ballots because of double voting for president?
the evidence that the palm beach ballot was wrong is disapearing . . .

It could expose the problems and corruption in our political system. It won't.
People will never stray from their Republican and Democratic options and will continue to vote against, instead of for.
<conspiracy>It's all a trick to make us believe that the GOP and Dem. aren't in cahoots</conspiracy>
I could have made the above somewhat more intelligent, but I lost my train of thought. damnit
note: I am NOT a republican, I just think this is getting ridiculous.
