Destiny 2 - What are Fated Engrams?

Fated Engrams have arrived in Destiny 2, but what are they and should you buy them?

Destiny 2 has seen some major changes over the last week. Both the December 5, 2017 and December 12, 2017 updates are changing some major mechanics in the game. One of those mechanics has to do with the Agent of the Nine, Xur. Everybody’s favorite vendor will now be selling Fated Engrams.

What are Fated Engrams?

Fated Engrams are exotic engrams that you can purchase from Xur during his time in Destiny 2 each week. These engrams will provide you with one exotic item that is not currently in your collection. Your Destiny 2 exotic collection includes every exotic you’ve ever earned, even if you later dismantled it. If you’ve previously unlocked the Prometheus Lens but dismantled it, don’t buy a Fated Engram hoping to get it back. That’s not how it works. This is for exotic items that you have never owned in Destiny 2.

How Much are Fated Engrams?

Fated Engrams are 97 Legendary Shards according to a screenshot provided by Bungie when they first announced they were coming to Destiny 2. That may seem like a high price to pay, but it’s not. At this point in Destiny 2, most dedicated Guardians are working with nearly complete exotic sets for their three characters, so a Fated Engram makes sense to finish up your exotic Collection with the remaining pieces. If you have the coin, that is.

Should I Buy a Fated Engram?

If Xur arrives each week and typically has two or more items that you need to buy, hold off on the Fated Engram for now. Instead, buy what he’s selling you at a massive discount. Continue to play the game and work on your exotic collection. Fated Engrams should be used not when you need a dozen exotics still, but when you need one or two to finish off a set. For example, if you’re missing a single piece of exotic armor with your Titan, it might be worth having them visit Xur and buying a Fated Engram.

Where Can I See What Exotics I Have?

The best place to see what exotics are already in your collection is to use the Destiny 2 app on your phone. Once you’re logged in and have it open, navigate to the middle icon at the bottom of the page. It’s a swirl with an arrow. Open that, choose the class you want, and then navigate to Collections. Any exotics that are greyed out are ones that you don’t already own and need to fully complete your set.

Note: You can buy any exotic back for a low price by visiting the vault, navigating to Collections, and then choosing the item you want. You will only see armor for the class you are currently playing, but all weapons will be present.

That sums up Fated Engrams, a welcome addition to Destiny 2 for those that still need a bit of gear. Be sure to visit the Shacknews Destiny 2 complete strategy guide for more on life as a Guardian.
