Sonic sped his way onto the Summer Game Fest stage to announce a new game in the iconic franchise. Sonic Superstars is a new 2D platformer starring Sonic and friends, and it combines the retro visuals of the classic games with a modern look. In addition to the announcement trailer, the game was given a fall 2023 release window.
Sega received a lot of love when it took the Sonic franchise back to its 2D roots with Sonic Mania back in 2017, and looks to do that once more with the release of Sonic Superstars later this year. The trailer showcased the hedgehog running back and forth between retro and modern graphics, leading fans to speculate about the possibility to toggle the art style in-game.
