Airwaks and RL Grime win Celebrity Pro-Am at Fortnite World Cup

Day 1 of the Fortnite World Cup featured the return of a staple in the competitive scene; the Celebrity Pro-Am. 50 duo teams composed of one pro player and one celebrity face off in a series of matches for a piece of the $3,000,000 prize pool (donated to a charity of their choice). This marks the third time that Epic Games has put on the fan favorite event. Ninja, Tfue, Marshmello, and Nav highlight a small handful of the talent featured at the Pro-Am. The tournament was packed with action and memorable moments, but only one team could emerge victorious.

The first of the four matches was somewhat of a warm up game. Things initially moved slow as players were still feeling out their competition and working on strategies. Some of the most intense moments were Jordan Fisher and Ewok’s run in with Tfue, one of Fortnite’s most skilled players. In the end, a flawless effort from SinOoh led to he and OKing winning the inaugural match. In Game 2, smart placement and quick reactions helped Jacob secure a win after a dizzying build battle with Cloakzy and Tfue. Cloakzy found himself finishing in second place once again when he couldn’t weather the storm late game, leading to Jelty taking a W for himself and Gaborever.

In the fourth and final game of the Celebrity Pro-Am, Marksman and JT Brown fended off Aydan to earn themselves the final victory royale of the night. The Pro-Am was scored the same way that all competitive Fortnite tournaments are. This means that teams not only gain points from winning games, but for eliminations and high placements as well. Because of this, Airwaks and RL Grime were able to win it all without ever winning a game. Airwaks and RL Grime also won the Pro-Am at the Summer Block Party back in June. The duo finished with 52 points. SinOoh and Oking came in second with 40 points, and Jelty and Gaborever rounded out the top 3 with 39 points. Not every team could walk away with a million dollars for their favorite charity, but every team was awarded a minimum of $20,000 when it was all said and done.

The madness continues on Day 2, where the duo finals will take place. Who do you predict will rise atop the standings and hoist the trophy? Sound off in the chatty and bookmark Shacknews’ Fortnite hub for all of your World Cup needs.
