Nintendo confirms no Amiibo support for Super Mario Maker 2

Published , by Josh Hawkins

One of the coolest features of the original Super Mario Maker was the ability to link up your Amiibo with the game and unlock special features and items you could use in your stages. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that we’ll be getting to see any of that kind of stuff in Super Mario Maker 2, as Nintendo has confirmed that there will be no Amiibo support in the upcoming sequel to the Mario level creator.

While visiting a special press event to check out Super Mario Maker 2, GameXplain confirmed with Nintendo representatives that Super Mario Maker 2 will not offer Amiibo support. For those looking forward to the mystery mushroom customs in the original, this might be a bit of a downer, but we could always see the little toy figures make a return at some point down the road, after the game’s initial release.

Leave those Amiibo at home, Super Mario Maker 2 won't support them at launch.

It’s unclear if the lack of support at launch means we’ll never see Amiibo make an appearance in Super Mario Maker 2, as Nintendo hasn’t officially stated that. In fact, the original Super Mario Maker received a lot of updates throughout its life cycle, which lead us to believe that we could see something similar to Super Mario Maker 2. For now, though, all we can is stare at our shelves full of Amiibo and cry in pain as we watch the dust begin to build up upon their shoulders.

The additional features that Amiibo brought into Super Mario Maker will be missed when Super Mario Maker 2 releases later this year. Hopefully Nintendo patches things up in the future, or we could see more users steering away from their Amiibo addictions. Still, there’s just something nice about having Mario and other Nintendo characters always watching over you, so who knows how much this will actually affect Amiibo sales as whole, as plenty of other games allow you to drop your Amiibo on the Switch and pick up some nice rewards. There's still a lot to love about Super Mario Maker 2, though, as you can see in our hands-on preview of the upcoming sequel.
