Team Sonic Racing - Hidden Volcano stage gameplay

Published , by Chris Jarrard

Not to be outdone by his italian plumber rival, Sonic the Hedgehog has enjoyed a few solid kart racing titles over the years. While the games did not receive the same level of fanfare as the Mario Kart series, they developed their own loyal fanbase on the back of quality racing fun, particularly with 2012’s Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. That game offered a wide variety of characters and rides, as well as a novel mid-race vehicle switching mechanic. The blue blur returns this summer with Team Sonic Racing, the latest entry in Sega’s mascot kart racing franchise.

Team Sonic Racing will work a bit differently than Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed in that it will keep all the action connected to the pavement. Vehicle switching has been retired for now and the development team is working to provide the best possible pure kart experience. The Shacknews video team has secured some exclusive new gameplay footage from the Hidden Volcano stage that shows off Sonic’s beautiful new racer.

In the gameplay video, the wild track design takes center stage, with steep banks and intense elevation changes winding around what appears to be the interior of a volcano. Racers speed around corners and grab pickups while looking to avoid laval pools or an untimely trip over the sides of the track into certain doom. Some track paths are coated with an icy blue hue, which contrasts strongly with the warmer colors in the level.

You can get in on the fun yourself when Team Sonic Racing releases for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 21.
