Smash Ultimate Ver. 2.0.0 adds Piranha Plant, who's still free this week

For those who have booted up Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the last few hours, they may have noticed that a new patch is out. However, balance tweaks are not the biggest story of this latest update. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has received its first official DLC character.

The Version 2.0.0 update welcomes in Piranha Plant, which was first revealed back in November during the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct. The deadly Mario foe uses a distinct arsenal of poisonous attacks, as well as several strikes that sees it launch its head at its opponents. Its Final Smash sees it turn into Petey Piranha and decimate its opponents, just as Petey himself did back during Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary story mode.

Piranha Plant was originally estimated to arrive sometime in February, so this is a surprise early drop for the leafy baddie. What this also means is that if you see your friends playing around this guy and want in on the action, there's still time. Remember that the period to add Piranha Plant to your Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster for no extra charge is still active.

Yes, the Piranha Plant Super Smash Bros. Ultimate pre-order bonus promotion is still active, but it won't be for much longer. The window is officially set to close this Thursday, January 31. If you own the retail version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, remember to register your copy on My Nintendo Rewards. The easiest way to do so is by highlight the game on the Switch home menu, hitting the Plus button, and selecting My Nintendo Rewards. Redeem the email code that Nintendo sends out and you should be good to go. If you purchased the game digitally, no worries. You should already have a code for Piranha Plant waiting in your inbox, but the code is only good until June 30.
