The Rainbow Six: Siege esports world ventured out to Paris, France. And for those who have followed the scene, Sunday's tournament followed a familiar narrative. G2 Esports (the former Penta Sports roster) continued its dominance of the Rainbow Six esports, as the team completed a 3-0 Grand Finals sweep of Evil Geniuses to win in Paris.
The deciding map went to Border, where G2 quickly asserted themselves on defense, with Juhani "Kantoraketti" Toivonen, in particular, working to pick off the EG forces and also knock out their diffusers in Round 2. G2 racked up a 4-0 lead in the final set and while EG briefly showed some life in taking the next two rounds, the Six Invitational winners showed why they're the best team in the world, with Fabian Hallsten and Daniel "Goga" Romero teaming up to eliminate the EG ranks one-by-one to clinch the tournament.
The is the former Penta Sports roster's first victory under the G2 Esports banner. G2 picked up the roster late last week. They performed as well as any team could, as they swept the entire tournament, going 2-0 in the group stages, 2-0 over Millenium in the quarterfinals, 2-0 over Team Secret in the semifinals, and 3-0 over Evil Geniuses. This is the second straight major in which the ex-Penta won a major by knocking off Evil Geniuses, but this was much more of a statement series than the reverse sweep was, showing G2 as the clear best team in Rainbow 6.
For their victory, G2 Esports walks away with $150,000.
