A new gameplay trailer for The Evil Within, a survival horror game from director Shinji Mikami shows off what to expect. We see Detective Sebastian Castellanos investigating a mass murder, only to find himself in a world filled with monsters.

Running on idTech 5, the game's due August 26 on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Publisher Bethesda today announced The Evil Within will come to PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PS3 on August 26.

What we've seen of The Evil Within so far has mostly focused on the build-up to awful things happening, but a new twelve-minute gameplay trailer skips straight into the unpleasantness. It starts off with Detective Castellanos hung upside-down surrounded by mutilated corpses while and then, well, things get worse.

The Evil Within preview: more survival than horror

Shinji Mikami has quite a background in survival horror games, having created the Resident Evil series, then turning the genre on its ear with RE4 in 2005. So when he said he wanted his newest title, The Evil Within, to bring the survival horror genre back to its heyday with a solid blend of action and horror, we were curious to see how he would do it. After seeing the first 15 minutes of gameplay from Mikami's Tango Gameworks studio, the game as it stands is a bit more ho-hum than scary.

The Evil Within creepy trailer reveals Shinji Mikami's 'Zwei'

Shinji Mikami's mysterious new survival horror codenamed 'Zwei' has been unveiled today as The Evil Within, coming in 2014 to PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and next-gen consoles. Despite this being the game's second announcement, we still don't know much more than we did a year ago. Still, Bethesda has released a pretty live-action trailer to look at.

Shinji Mikami's Zwei formally announced

Word recently came that Resident Evil creator's first game at his new studio Tango Gameworks would be a return to his roots, a survival horror codenamed Zwei. Now publisher Bethesda Softworks has formally confirmed that, and shared a little concept art to get you in the mood.

Mikami's next game is survival-horror, platforms not determined

Shinji Mikami has shared more details on his upcoming game, codenamed "Zwei." The title is the first game at his new Tango Gameworks studio, and he's serving as executive director and getting hands-on with development. The code name, he says, has nothing to do with the game content.

ZeniMax Grabs Resident Evil Creator Mikami's Studio Tango Gameworks

After announcing earlier this month that it had picked up $150 million in investment, ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda and id Software, today revealed it has acquired Tango Gameworks, the studio founded by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

"It's refreshing to find a publisher who understands, trusts, and supports the development of blockbuster games and works to make it a collaborative effort," Mikami said in the announcement. "The library of AAA franchise titles ZeniMax owns speaks for itself. We are very excited to be joining ZeniMax and working with a company that is dedicated to creating the best games ever made."
