Rumor: Civilization 5 Mac Version Coming 'Very Soon'

MacRumors is reporting "that Civilization V for the Mac is due very soon -- likely in the coming weeks." No additional details are available at this time, but it is likely that the Mac version will be available through Steam and utilize Steamworks as its PC counterpart.

A Mac version was always planned, but Firaxis has been careful not to mention any release dates or timelines. Shacknews has contacted publisher 2K Games for more information, but for now, assume this is still just rumor.

3D Dot Game Heroes Update Adds New Features, LittleBigPlanet's Sackboy

Although PlayStation 3 users will have to wait until 2011 to see Sackboy return in LittleBigPlanet 2, the adorable character made its way to 3D Dot Game Heroes in a free update released yesterday.

The patch also adds an additional 50 player-made characters to the game from Atlus' "Hall of Heroes" character-sharing hub, fixes a number of game bugs, and allows players to bring weapons from previous saves into the inventory of new heroes using 3D Dot's New Game + feature. Read more »

Civilization 5 Review

Firaxis is changing up a lot of things with the fifth main installment of its legendary Civilization franchise, following up on the highly successful Civilization IV. There are likely to be changes that alienate some fans, but overall, these changes breathe a new life into the series. If you haven't been following the preview coverage of the game, get ready for some major shifts in Civ.

The biggest changes are within the game's combat system, which now disallows stacking units. In previous Civ games, combat was about throwing large stacks of units against other stacks of units, then having the math add it all up and declare the winner. It was boring and not at all representative of real military combat. Now, since only a single unit may garrison inside of a city, combat takes place around and away from them. Read more »

Civilization 5 Multiplayer Preview

Earlier this week, I got to play around 2 hours of Civilization V multiplayer against three human opponents and it was generally a good experience, though I have some concerns. Civ V will support simultaneous-turn multiplayer out of the box, though other multiplayer modes will be added later.

In general, the simultaneous turns system works well, but as the game progresses it will begin to take longer and longer for each player's computer to process turns. Throw networking into the mix and you're looking at a lot of added time in between turns as the player count increases. If you can deal with that, you'll likely have a good time, but games even on the quickest settings will take many hours to complete. Read more »

Civilization 5 Demo Hitting on Release Day, Not Prior to Launch

Though Firaxis and 2K had previously stated that a demo for Civilization V would be released prior to the game's September 21 launch date, it will now be made available on the same day.

"At the time of that announcement, we expected to be able to get the demo out before the 21st, but unfortunately we weren't able to finalize it in the timeframe we had initially planned, and for that we're very sorry," writes 2K community manager "2K Greg". Read more »

Weekend Confirmed Episode 20

It's anything but a lazy midsummer's show as a Whatcha' Been Playin? packed with heavy-hitters including Civilization 5, Starcraft 2, and Madden 11 gets Garnett, Brian, and Jeff off to rocking start. There's so much in there that Cannata-ford a New Game spills over to the third segment before giving way to the Warning. Your thoughts on why developers try and compete with the likes of Halo and Modern Warfare for multiplayer shooters starts the conversation which also includes choosing the right place to sit when gaming, and a brief look at the issues raised this week on Gamasutra concerning whether focus testing resulted in Activision abandoning female action heroes. News from EA's investor reports hits the Front Page along with one of our favorite games, Torchlight, getting the sequel we all hoped for announced.

Civilization 5 Hands-on Preview

Since the series debuted in 1991, Civilization sits pretty high up there on the tally of total game hours for me. Playing a nearly final build of Civilization V reminded me of the game's powerfully addictive qualities. I get completely engrossed writing alternate histories leading a society from its humble beginnings at the dawn of recorded history to becoming the dominant globe-spanning power of the modern world. That basic formula remains, but as well as a pretty visual update, this latest entry introduces a number of changes that should appeal to both the long time fan and the potential first-time player.
