Rain trailer celebrates today's launch

As clouds gather over PlayStation 3 to unleash Rain later today, the launch trailer has trickled out a little in advance. It's very much the sort of artsy game that seems at home on PlayStation, and we enjoyed what we played in July, so huzzah for the launch.

Rain falling on PS3 on October 1

Rain, the moody ghost story from Sony Japan Studio, will be coming to North America on October 1 for $14.99. And although it's exclusive to PlayStation Network, the game still has pre-order bonuses.

Ordering by September 30 will get you a dynamic theme, five avatars, a musical montage, and a static theme. The static theme will be available as soon as you place your pre-order, while the rest will roll out on October 1 alongside the game.

Rain preview: absorbing the world

Slated for a release this fall, one of the last games to bow out the PS3 is the quietly beautiful action-adventure Rain. Although its more methodical gameplay is a little slow to start, Rain's unique approach and melancholic atmosphere is ultimately its biggest draw.

Seeing a girl with an invisible silhouette being chased by a ghostly creature, a boy embarks on a mission to rescue the girl. His chase leads him into a mysterious world where he too becomes invisible, only to be seen as a silhouette while in the seemingly never-ending rain of the European architecture-inspired world.

Rain (not to be confused with Heavy Rain) was one of two promising projects debuted by Sony's Japan Studio at Gamescom last year. A new story trailer released today sheds more light on the plot, and drops a release window of this fall.

Rain gameplay trailer shows soggy spooky story

Sony announced Rain, a spooky story about a boy who enters the world of ghosts only visible in rain, at Gamescom last August then went quiet as the grave. Perhaps it was fleeing from ghost dogs. It's finally ready to talk again though, and today released a trailer with five charming minutes of straight gameplay footage from the start of the game.

Sony debuted a handful of new PlayStation 3 titles at its Gamescom press briefing today, two of which hail from the company's Japan Studio. Rain (working title) and Puppeteer both carry some artsy-game chops, but in radically different directions.
