New Super Mario Bros 2 review: a cash-in

New Super Mario Bros 2 review: a cash-in

It's amazing that after 25 years, Mario is not only still relevant, but a dominant force in gaming. While he's starred in countless platformers, we've never tired of them because each new title brought with it surprising innovations. Last year's Super Mario 3D Land, for example, remains one of the only games on the 3DS to justify turning the 3DS depth slider on. Unfortunately, New Super Mario Bros 2 fails to live up to its name; it brings nothing new to the table. By failing to innovate, NSMB2 is easily the stalest game in the mainline Mario franchise.

New Super Mario Bros 2 developers address gold obsession

New Super Mario Bros 2 shows an obsession with gold coins we haven't seen the likes of since Yukon Cornelius in the old Rudolph TV special. So what inspired the developers to make the sweet clink-clink of coins the central point of the game? Apparently it began from a power-up in Super Mario 3D Land, and with quiet muttering.

New Super Mario Bros 2 will offer paid DLC

When Nintendo said New Super Mario Bros 2 was all about the money, they weren't kidding. Nintendo has announced that New Super Mario Bros 2 will be the first game in the company's history to offer for-pay DLC after launch. Additional "Coin Rush" stages will be developed after the game comes out.

Although this may signal a change in Nintendo's strategy, NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime was quick to point out that NSMB2 will be "full featured," and that no content is being removed for the purposes of being made into DLC.

New Super Mario Bros 2 coming to 3DS in August

Nintendo has unveiled the identity of its secret 2D Mario game for 3DS. It's New Super Mario Bros 2. (Although it's technically the third game in the New Super Mario Bros franchise...) Once again, Tanooki suits are all the rage, as seen in the first screenshot for the upcoming sequel. It's unclear if the game will support multiplayer as in New Super Mario Bros Wii, but given the portable's smaller screen real estate, it seems unlikely.
