Don't Starve getting multiplayer this summer

Don't Starve getting multiplayer this summer

Let's take a quick trip back in time to July 2013, when Shacknews spoke to Klei about the wilderness survival game, Don't Starve. Some of our Chatty posters asked the studio about multiplayer, to which Klei Community Manager Corey Rollins stated "wasn't something that was a fit for our vision and purpose of the game."

A lot has changed since then and that includes Klei's stance on multiplayer. The studio has announced that multiplayer will indeed be coming to Don't Starve late this summer with an expansion appropriately titled Don't Starve Together.

Why Don't Starve moved away from free-to-play

Klei's Don't Starve grew into a gaming phenomenon last year, with its whimsically unique take on survival. But the wilderness survival game didn't always look like it did when lead designer Kevin Forbes first presented the idea to Shacknews back in 2012. In fact, Don't Starve was originally envisioned as a free-to-play adventure.

The Screecher injects terror into Don't Starve

Don't Starve is already a harrowing adventure in itself. It focuses on the struggle to survive in a wide-open wilderness, while building a fire to ward off the savage creatures that lurk in the darkness of night. But Klei has injected a little more fear into its survival game, just in time for the Halloween holiday, with a free mod called The Screecher.

I reached out to several Shackers who are currently active in the world of Don't Starve and sent their questions off to the folks at Klei. Community Manager Corey Rollins (along with Klei founder, Jamie Cheng) returned with answers.

Mark of the Ninja dev turns to sandbox mode with Don't Starve

Klei Entertainment is preparing to venture into new territory. After a banner year in which the independent studio released Shank 2 and the highly acclaimed Mark of the Ninja, Klei is now bringing their affinity for tough-as-nails titles to the sandbox realm with Don't Starve. To learn more about this survival game, Shacknews talked to Klei's lead designer, Kevin Forbes.

Don't Starve takes place in a mysterious island wilderness. Players take the role of Wilson, a gentleman scientist from 1920's New England. Forbes points out that Wilson isn't particularly good at what he does, so he tries to take a shortcut by making a deal with a demon named Maxwell. Like many deals with the devil, this does not end well, as Wilson is tossed in the middle of the wilderness with few means of defense.
