What's the deal with online play?

There comes a point where you would think that gaming companies would get this "online play" thing right. However, that doesn't seem to be the case; far from it actually. Since I mostly play Nintendo games, it feels like the Big N gets it wrong more often than not with their online play.

Let's look at few examples on online play and I'll start with the better one. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was one of the first Nintendo games that used online features and it still is one of the better experiences on the Nintendo online service. It feels like there is minimal lag and can connect to the server most of the time. Fans of the game are still asking for more DLC or a brand new Kart game. I would have to agree that it's time for the next installment of Mario Kart. I'll splash in Pokemon Sword and Shied and Clubhouse Games taking advantge of the online features as well. They could be better but the games are playable with friends.

Then we have Smash Brothers and Mario Maker 2. The online features that allow you to play with other people are hit or miss. Sometimes the games are playable and won't lag, and then you have the other instance where the game is unplayable and lags like crazy. I play Mario Maker 2 all the time and would like to play multiplayer too but the servers are still s bad as they were when the game first came out. The same can be said for Smash Brothers where the whole point is playing against other people and you can't do it.

The whole point of this post was in response of Super Mario Party getting an online update today with new online features. Super Mario Party always felt a little empty and this update, allowing you to actually play games/boards with friends fills that void. It just feels like this type of update should have been done a long time ago.

What games would you like to see get a well deserved update to their online features? What games would you like to see get online fearures in the first place?
