The Great Catchuping

The Great Catchuping

Catching up is hard work.

dael

Last week a local retailer posted about incoming Playstation 5 stock and when it would go up for sale. I set my calendar and despite their melting servers I eventually got through and my card was even charged. Only to have them post about melting servers and manually needing to match units with payments. That meant another 2 days of nail biting but I lucked out. I have a PS5 now!

Have you tried it? The user experience is just wow! The interface is so fast and responsive. The store is so quick and easy to navigate. The YouTube videos are already playing before the button is released. Amazing device. The only negative so far is Plex not connecting to my local server due to some security restrictions with in the PS5. Looks like the Plex server will need to be exposed to the internet for it to be able to connect? Anyone else get it to work locally?

The main point of this post is that I skipped PS4 entirely. I have a lot of catching up to do. What have I missed?

I already have PS+ (wow), EA Play and Demon's Souls. I'll get The Last of Us 2 when my credit card cools down.

I already started The Last Guardian and it's amazing.

I already bought God of War, loved 1 and 2 but how is 3? Do you recommend playing that too?

I played Uncharted 1 on PS3 and it was alright, how is the rest of the series?

I tried Bloodborne since I enjoy Souls games but am intimidated the time commitment... how is it compared to the rest of the souls games?

I enjoy JRPGs, FF7 Remake is good yes?

What else should I play? What am I missing?

edit: just testing to see if Cortex posts are editable

You have some great gaming ahead. The uncharted series is great. Horizon us great. Dragon warrior 11 if you havent played that yet is great.

yes you need to play Horizon Zero Dawn !
I played Uncharted 1-3 back to back and that's also recommended, especially since you can buy the Remastered pack
starting on Spiderman now, I'll see if I can get a hang of the combat and movement

Also, if you’d like something you can play with your son, Concrete Genie is a very sweet and colorful exclusive that’s really under appreciated.

Basically stick with all the exclusives. That should be a pretty good guide on what to play.

You mentioned JRPG so I'll recommend Dragon Quest XI. It's old school JRPG mechanics and a love letter to those old style games. I LOVE it! I haven't read anything about how it plays on PS5.

Also, you might look to Ghost of Tsushima. Probably the last PS4 Sony published titled of the era.

You might want to skip God Of War 3. If you don't have the nostalgia for the series, it's basically alright, but not worth going out of your way to try it. The newest God Of War is really excellent, go for that!

Bloodborne is great, relatively short if you just mainline the story without exploring side stuff and doing optional bosses, might want to hold out for a bit, rumours of a PS5. But if you crave Souls games, go right in.

The Uncharted series is good, first being the worst. I would say that I enjoyed two the most, but it's a case of "right game right time". It was so much better than the original and anything else, played well, had great set pieces etc. It still is a good experience, no doubt you've played something similar recently on pc or xbox.
I'd suggest skipping straight to 4. It's the best, although it really gets too long near the end.

Days Gone is a great but often overlooked Sony exclusive.

I think I liked Uncharted 2 & 3 more than 4 and Lost Legacy but all are worth playing.

So you're gonna probably want to check out Persona 5 (the latest deluxe version or whatever). New God of War is much less entwined with the others in the series. Look for Spiderman, Horizon Zero Dawn, the rest of the Uncharted games, Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption 2, Bloodborne, FF VII Remake, Nier Automata, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Monster Hunter: World and Iceborne, Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes as well as 7, Tetris Effect, Shadow of Colossus remake, and Titanfall 2. Obviously some of these are cross-platform so you may already have them elsewhere and I didn't even get into the indy darlings. If you haven't picked up Journey give that a go and I'll echo Hollow Knight on any platform you can get it on.

Oh and there's Ni No Kuni and it's sequel.

I'd skip the sequel. I was so disappointed in several aspects of the game. For one it has like 5 music tracks in total. Combat was dull; which is key to an rpg. Awesome visuals, but even for an eyecandy fan like myself it just wasn't enough to hold me. Waste of a CE purchase. Never could get that paper craft thing built.

It's definitely not as well liked as the first. I think it's up to you whether you take the chance.
