Does This Song Suck? Everclear - Santa Monica

It's time for everyone's favorite series of Cortex articles! Today we discuss Everclear's "Santa Monica."

the man with the briefcase

Today, I continue posting random songs to this Cortex platform to ask Shackers the same question. Does this song suck? Today's song is Everclear's "Santa Monica."

Reasons it might suck:

  • Santa Monica is one of the most overrated and worst beach cities in Southern California
    • Also full of tourist trap bullshit
  • The lead singer's hair isn't the same color as his beard
    • He also sings like he's constipated
      • Also, what is the deal with his fucking head tilts?
  • That guitar hook is not really good
  • The lyrics don't even sound like a song about California
  • This was the moment that 90s alternative rock music began to suck
    • Kurt Cobain's corpse was barely decaying, but these guys just had to defile it with this song
  • The chorus
    • Watch the world die, indeed

Reasons it might not suck:

  • Over 20 million views on YouTube
  • This might be Everclear's best song
    • All of their other songs are basically just copies of this song
  • The lady in the music video
    • But the domestic violence implied in her scenes is concerning
  • Lead singer Art Alexakis kinda looks like he should have been in a boy band

That hair and beard color combo...

The question I pose to you, Shacknews... Does this song suck?

nope. chorus is actually probably its weakest section but the lyrics are entertaining enough and it’s a good karaoke song

This song was in Indigo Prophecy / Fahrenheit! In fact it was an unlockable you could just listen to. That was weird.

an enjoyable song to semi-ironically sing along to, but not a good song, largely because of the weak-ass phrase "big black boots". i had not seen this video, but wow. awful. most everclear songs are better than this one.

It kinda sucks. Not like painfully sucks, it's just generic 90s-ass pop rock. Everclear is the musical equivalent of Dunkaroos. An artifact of the 90s that was tasty in a terrible way that made you feel kinda bad after, and inexplicably came back recently.

My first thought was this exactly - "It kinda sucks." It's generic, musically simplistic, no talent required to write or play it. Not much there to redeem it.

It's like they took grunge and backed off till it was milquetoast enough for white-bread America.

Same. It probably helps that they are from Portland though. I like hometown bands. I have also met Alex a couple times. He is a pretty cool guy.

That album was fantastic, but I guess Santa Monica kind of wore out on me.

And Invisible Stars was totally underrated.

Their best song is actually Heroin Girl which features an uninspired-yet-adequate grunge riff with a drunk/stoned guy kind of talking over it.

Nah, it's not wonderful and the lead singer can't sing on key at all, but it's OK

      NOT suck.

It is their best song though, and the video is okay. Not the best 90s Alternative, but we were working with what we had.

That album is great, though it’s not the best song on the album, the band was great in the Sparkle and Fade era

First time I ever went to LA my wife and I went to Santa Monica peer and I saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time ever. And a guy was out on the dock playing this song on his guitar and it felt good. Everything felt good. I was happy in that moment, thinking what crazy luck to just happen to be at that spot with that song playing.

A couple years later I realized that guy probably goes there every day and plays those same chords over and over and over and over again so schmucks like me give him $5. Of course that is the song you play when you are there. That’s like being amazed someone is playing New York, New York at Time Square.

Anyhoo, I still love the song even if I am a dope.
