Does This Song Suck? Fatboy Slim - Praise You

It's time for everyone's favorite series of Cortex articles! Tonight we discuss Fatboy Slim's "Praise You."

the man with the briefcase

Tonight, I continue posting random songs to this Cortex platform to ask Shackers the same question. Does this song suck? Tonight's song is Fatboy Slim's "Praise You."

Reasons it might suck:

  • Fatboy Slim seems to be a fatshaming name
  • I think people really remember this song for its music video more than the actual music
    • The dancing isn't even that good
  • The actual core electronic music loop is kinda boring
  • This song isn't even close to the best Fatboy Slim track

Reasons it might not suck:

  • The music video was charmingly low budget when it dropped
  • The lyrics are somewhat uplifting
  • 14 million views on YouTube
    • This song was also used in a ton of advertisements
  • Video director Spike Jonze sorta looks like Napoleon Dynamite
Anyone else see the resemblance to Napoleon Dynamite?

The question I pose to you, Shacknews... Does this song suck?

It's kind of break-even for all the reasons you listed there. Really astute, actually. I'm going to vote "doesn't suck" though. Added it to my work playlist for the line recently. Seems to put everybody at ease, uplift the mood a bit. I'd almost completely forgotten about Fatboy Slim until then. You're right though, he has better tracks to chose from.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmKJOdRf_3s

It's not particularly great, and outside of the video it's one of my least favorite songs he's done.

It’s a terrific jam, and also local Canadian band The Glorious Sons (MY WIFE’s fave) do a great live version of it that you wouldn’t expect from this band:

I saw them perform it live, twice.

Also that lo-fi homemade video for the original song is unforgettable. I don’t know if those were actual street performers or whatever but I can still remember a lot of their faces and “dance moves”.

It does not suck but Fatboy Slim had made better songs.

It's mostly quite catchy, but I do sort of hate the vocal jitter he does on 'should'.

It’s not Fatboy Slim dancing that’s Spike Jonze the director of the video.

It does not suck. While repetitive, it's also creative and iterates with each repetition. The effect of turning a syllable into a staccato note is super cool as applied here. I didn't even remember the music video for this one until you posted it. It's charming and funny before flash mobs became tired.

It's the first song I can remember that triggered a visceral feeling of revulsion when I heard it. And then MuchMusic played it all the time. It might be single handedly responsible for me not watching that channel as a teenager.

Song does NOT suck. It reminds me of the pure magic atmosphere of the turn of the millennium. Sampled and used in a lot of stuff, helped breakbeats and dance music enter the mainstream and paved the way for the EDM renaissance of the 2000s.

Lol, I cannot remember the last time I saw the video tho....lol.

No. No it does not. But it was definitely over-played at the time of its release. It was definitely in way too many ads.
