I went to the ocean and took some pictures

Ruby Beach, WA is where I ended up. I was there for sunrise, then I wandered the beach for a couple hours.

I thought I had it all planned out. I wanted to go to Hurricane Ridge before the winter restrictions started next week. It got snowed in, though. The phone report said 34" of snow.

I left home around 1:45, and arrived at Port Angeles around 4:30 AM. I realized Hurricane Ridge was closed, and re-routed to Ruby Beach. Not before staring at a million stars for a few minutes. It was very clear and nice.

Ruby Beach was 2 hours away, and sunrise was around 7:30 AM, so I made it in time. I was the only one there. Short hike down to the beach.

Some of these are just mildly interesting. Maybe there are a couple good ones. It was a beautiful day.

Second picture of the day, 6:52 AM. The sun was starting to show, there weren't many stars left. 3440x1440

7:16 AM, the sky has nice color. Same rock, different exposure. 3000x2000

7:48 AM, the sun is just now starting to hit the rocks/islands out there. I like this one for the horizontal lines. 5120x1440

7:50 AM, sunrise colors reflected on the sand. 3000x2000

Sand, driftwood, and scrub brush (?). 3000x2000

A lot of potential skipping stones! 3000x2000

9:04 AM, the sun is starting to hit some of the waves. Compare this picture to the next one. 3000x2000

I used a ND filter to get long exposure. It looks cool, but unrealistic. 3000x2000

I like this one. The misty shoreline leading up to the rock with the birds posing. 2000x3000

By 10 AM I was tired, so I started heading back. I switched to my macro lens and got some detail shots. This is some kind of seaweed or kelp I think. 3000x2000

Abbey Island, 10:15 AM. 3000x2000

Dew on a fungus. 3000x2000

Orange Jelly Spot Fungus. 6000x4000

That's it.

Are the 'smooth' ones cool or fake?

For being late November it was a really nice day, especially on the coast.

I skimmed through my dashcam footage and didn't see you.

Some day we'll have to go for a drive, I'll follow you.

It smells distinctly like outboard behind the car, you may regret that! I get down to 10 AFR on a WOT pull and everything in the rear view goes dank

But yeah. Might be fun to hit Ben Howard, Sultan Basin, and Woods Creek with a little zoom zoom brap brap

Nice. I did Ben Howard on the way back from Index last week. Fun rollercoaster. Haven't tried those others.

      More thoughts.

Ocean/beach photos are hard! Things are changing every second, so finding artistic things can be a challenge. Every wave is different.

Sunrise on the ocean beach is kind of boring. A little color in the sky, and the sun starts shining on the waves as it's rising, but overall it wasn't worth getting there for sunrise. I won't do that again. Almost 400 miles of driving. Be easier if I just wait until later in the day and take the ferry over in the morning, but even then it's over 3 hours away.

Next time I'm skipping the beach and going to the forest. Hoh rainforest should be good in the winter.

Where are you, like far east Canada?

This was almost the westernmost point of the US (lower 48 obviously). Looks like La Push is the westernmost point, and I was just a few miles from there.

~124 W. longitude vs ~60 W. longitude for Nova Scotia.

          Indeed, Nova Scotia

I'd love to see what you could capture early morning Peggy's Cove!

Under 3 hours from Tacoma, easy! ;)

I hadn't done any of the 'scenic' beaches in many years. Went to Ocean Shores a couple times, but that's pretty much just sandy and flat.

I could do a Cortex post about my gear. ;)

I got the low end of the 'nice' cameras. Canon RP.

Way more detail than a cell phone, LOL. Sure I used to take OK pictures with my phone, but the detail and sharpness wasn't really there.

I'm working on more. I got some good ones.

Also apparently Mt. St. Helens is still open. I thought the road was closed. Maybe when I checked it was closed.

Here's the picture they posted. Very snowy. https://i.redd.it/alm1avzfwt061.jpg
