I don't know or really care about which game is "better", but I know I had a lot more fun with UT.

That being said, I'm gonna put on my semi-academic essayist hat and say that I don't think you do a really good job of making your case here. When I get to the meat & potatoes of your essay, there's a whole bunch of it that is just assertions rather than really laying out your case. You do explain a few "why" points but not very in-depth, so honestly a lot of it ends up reading like "UT is better because its better".

My reasoning for why UT is better than Q3 is because UT has held up better over the years in regards to just firing it up to have some nostalgic fun. UT has the modes, mods, and bots to keep it feeling fresh and fun after all these years.

Oh SHIT. It is on. For the record, I felt UT was the better experience out of the box experience but ended up coming back to Q3 more than UT later down the line.

      • reply
        October 21, 2022 5:17 PM

Yeah. Quake 3 is a step above mechanically, the movement and the shooting and the feel deep down was so much better, but UT was the better package overall when it came to content and options, no denying that.

And that gulf in feeling lingered for so long as others licensed both technologies for their games. Games like CoD always felt better than shooters using Unreal, like it wasn't even close. It's still kind of noticeable to this day in some games, but people have been able to do far better with UE in this last decade. There have been a few games where I couldn't immediately tell it was Unreal under the hood just from getting hands on with it.

I'm not sure about UT vs Q3A, but I spent so much time playing Onslaught when UT2004 came out, there was nothing else like it at the time. The vehicles, the focused objective based gameplay... there was nothing else like it at the time and it felt like a major leap forward.

Watching this brought back so many memories. I must have played ONS-Torlan over a hundred hours :)

Ok, I'm gonna have to go back and check, but I'm pretty sure that the textures in Quake 3 were of much better quality than in UT. Wasn't UT still using paletted textures and they were kinda low res while Q3 used like TGA and stuff for full 32 bit textures? I could swear the textures in UT looked like ass compared to Q3.
