It’s a big day for my physical media collection

It’s been a while since I picked up new vinyl and Blu-Rays, today I got both!

I’ve posted about my vinyl collection once or twice on here before, I’m pretty sure. A hobby I got into roughly a year ago, it’s been super dope to get some of my favorite music on physical media. I’ve been doing the same with movies, collecting my favorite flicks so that I can own them outright. A couple favorites came in on the same day!

All the way back in September I ordered The Last of Us Part 2 Covers and Rarities vinyl. This record specifically features the songs that the characters sing in-game. Like Ashley Johnson’s Take on Me cover, or her and Troy Baker’s cover of Wayfaring Stranger. I think my personal favorite is Through The Valley. I still remember hearing Ellie sing that song in one of the reveal trailers and it gave me goosebumps. A fine addition to my collection.

I also got my 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray copy for Scream (2022). I haven’t stopped talking about this movie since it came out, I’m obsessed with it. Last year, I bought the fancy steelbook for the original Scream that Paramount put out and it’s dope. This is just the latest addition to what I hope will become a collection of the entire film on physical media. I’ve already dug into the deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as the one honoring the late Wes Craven. I’m also a sucker for a good director’s commentary, so I’ll have to put aside some time this week to check that out too.

Though I love my digital libraries and streaming services, there’s something special about actually owning my favorite entertainment. I don’t have to worry about licensing deals expiring, or service going out of business and me losing access to something I previously rented/bought.

I am very familiar with this feeling. haha

I own way too much physical media and currently have a bunch of out-of-print CDs en route from Ebay right now (hopefully) for bands and albums I recently discovered that aren't on streaming services.

That's the main reason I've stuck with GPM/YTM because I could upload stuff that wasn't available in the streaming catalog. Over the years, the catalog has gotten better (and worse at times), plus I don't look for those smaller bands as much, so it's not quite as big of a thing before. But, there are still groups I have uploaded that are just never likely to make it into the streaming catalog.

I half wish video would do the same thing, but I get that's a massive more amount of storage required to pull that off. But, without that kind of feature, I don't see how we'd ever be able to kill off DVDs entirely.

I'll have to finally check it out. Bummer it's not on any of my streaming services right now. :P

Yeah, they're all on Paramount+ as of right now. The rights to the Scream movies have been to hell and back, so they've done some bouncing around over the years.

It's actually a sequel! They just decided not to call it Scream 5. And yeah, it's great!

It's super weird, but I keep forgetting that The Last Of Us 2 is even a thing, and has been out for a while. I haven't bought (or obviously played) it yet.

Still stuck in previous gen PS4 with an older TV and I guess I was waiting until I someday got a new TV and a PS5.

RE: your purchases, I'm with you! Still buying movies, and CDs (latest Joe Satriani comes out on Friday) and vinyl. The next movie I will probably buy is the UNCHARTED 4K; maybe the steelbook version. I don't buy a tonne of movies, but I'll want that if it has some extensive bonus features.

For gaming-related vinyl I don't have much: BioShock 2 (box set); NuDoom 2016; and Far Cry: Primal.

Yeah the TLOU 2 is actually my first gaming vinyl. I remember hearing a few of these songs in-game and hoping that they would release it as its own thing, so I pre-ordered this the second it was announced haha. My only Steelbook is Scream (1996) but I would love to get some more, they're super cool!

For the most part, I do still like owning movies on physical media, but the pace at which I buy them has reduced quite a bit over the last 5-ish years. If it's a movie I really love, though, I tend to buy the disc.

I've got a big folio here of audio CD's that I haven't listened to in well over a decade. It's probably time to be honest about the fact that I'm very unlikely to ever pull them out again, and just trash the lot.

Physical media is getting harder to get. It sucks.

I wanted to grab Goodfellas and it’s out of print since September :(

I wanted to grab the original Spider-Man trilogy and it’s out of print and replaced with an inferior set that costs more :(

Yeah, all the major B&M retailers seem to be phasing out physical media in store.

Barnes and Noble seems to be the only holdout, since physical media is their specialty.

          Yep!

I went into Best Buy the other day and it was like 1 maybe 2 racks of movies and that was it. It used to be aisle after aisle.

Now when I try to find something it’s like I have Amazon, Deep Discount, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and maybe Books-A-Million to search through.

If they don’t have it online or in store, you’re pretty much out of luck or you’re paying hugely inflated prices on eBay.

Here’s a nice little Scorsese blu-ray collection with Goodfellas for $13

You’re out of luck if you want the Digibook version of the Spider-Man Trilogy.

Honestly, the 4K version of Goodfellas isn’t that much an improvement over the latest blu-ray release. I hope they do a better remastering it if they release it again on 4K.

WB can do a great job if they put in the effort - Unforgiven and Blade Runner are spectacular on 4K.

I’m pretty sure if I decided to write a cortex post about my physical media collection it would be that I’m getting rid of it all because I haven’t touched literally any of it in years.
