Why can't we have a Waffle House in California?

Why can't we have a Waffle House in California?

Look, I just really, really like waffles. Okay?

Blake_Morse

We've got a lot of tasty, tasty grub here in Northern California. Whether we're talking fancy pants 5-Star restaurants full of gourmet options and greasy spoon diners for late-night munchies, we've got plenty of options. One that's painfully absent however is America's own Waffle House, and it breaks my heart.

I didn't discover the glory that is Waffle House until my early-to-mid twenties. I was helping a friend of mine move from Arizona to Nashville on a road trip throught the south straight out of some coming of age indie film. With a few exceptions, most of my meals ended up taking the form of various breakfast foods from whatever Waffle House was along the route.

I loved it for a number of reasons: Firs off, do not ever doubt my love of waffles, EVER! They are superior to pancakes in every way. A good waffle is a blend of a crispy shell and soft center and those little nooks make delectable pools of syrup and butter that make every bite scrumptious. Secondly, as a young barista I wasn't exactly flush with cash, but I could afford to eat like a king without putting a massive dent in my wallet.

I do my best to hit up a Waffle House whenever I'm near one. But man oh man do I wish I could get my hashbrowns double covered and smothered whenever I wanted to. Alas, Waffle House currently has no locations on the West Coast at all. It don't know if that will be changing anytime soon, but I really wish it would. I just want waffles at two in the morning when I'm stoned out of my mind. Is that too much to ask?

Do you favor Belgian Waffles with their deep squares the size of hot tubs filled with a blend of butter and syrup? Or do you prefer smaller squares squares that don't cut the roof of your mouth?

      I prefer smaller squares.

      A great question.

What I really want is a Bojangles, though.

You can get them covered in just about anything. Gravy? Check. Cheese? Check. Mushrooms and onions? Check.

The blood of the drunk guy next to you who started a fight with the cashier? Free of charge.

Some crispy hashbrowns smothered in gravy or cheese sounds right up my alley.

There's tons of options for customizing them. Mushrooms, onions, gravy, you name it.

We have Roscoe's and plenty of other chicken and waffles joints. Is Waffle House really that much better? Honestly asking, never been to Roscoe's, mainly because I wouldn't make the 60-90 minute drive home before my bowels give way. This is why I can't eat out more than 15 minutes from my place.

Roscoe's is a whole other experience and I would only go there for their chicken and waffles specifically. Waffle House is more of a diner chain like Denny's but probably a lower tier than them if I'm being honest. Still, so damn good!

We do have Denny's. But they suck except for Moons over my Hammy.

I've have never dined at a Waffle House. I remember one of the guests on No Reservations espousing it in much the same way you did.

Waffle House is good but it’s not that good

It’s mostly got price going for it over a place like dennys

That and the customizable hash browns

The solution to the Waffle Housing crisis to simply build more Waffle Homes.

The same goes for the PNW. Everybody should have access to a Waffle House.

As a consolation prize you get Norm's, at least! It may not be Waffle House, but it scratches the same itch imho.

It true. There was a situation it too long ago where a waitress in one was caught on camera doing some kind of treatment on her hair…in the sink, in the front of the restaurant, directly in front of customers. It’s trashiness if unifying and transcends race, color, religion, or sexuality.

      Doesn't IHOP have waffles?

Every self respecting truck stop diner I've ever been to has waffles.

Best choice? Buy an iron and make your own anytime you want, any way you want.

It ain't as cheap as waffle house, I will give you that. I've never had their waffles either, but their pancakes are okay.

I still think buying an iron and making your own is the best choice.

Or skip the iron and just make pancakes.
