Bungie Overhauls Destiny 2's Weapons System, Talks Super Abilities

Out with the old (primary, second, and heavy) and in with the new—kinetic, energy, and power—in Destiny 2.

During today's Destiny 2 reveal, developer Bungie gave concrete info on changes players can look forward to in the sequel, highlighted by an explanation of the game's overhauled weapons system.

The original Destiny categorized weapons by primary, secondary, and heavy. Destiny 2 retires those categorizations in favor of kinetic, energy, and power. Each group includes weapons you're probably already familiar with, stylized and balanced for Destiny's growing universe. For instance, sniper and fusion rifles are considered power guns.

Bungie also showed off new Super Abilities. Dawnblade is a sword Super Ability unique to the Warlock class: Warlocks jump, pull out a sword, and slice through enemies below them. A second Super Ability revealed during today's reveal is Sentinel, a shield summoned by the Titan class that can be thrown. Flinging the shield at a closer enemy inflicts massive damage. Throw it at a group of enemies standing some distance away and the shield ricochets between them.

Destiny 2 will release on September 8 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC, along with a suite of peripherals made by gaming lifestyle brand Razer. The PC version will be hosted by Blizzard on its Blizzard Launcher (the artist formerly known as Battle.net). All versions will include clan support for when you want to play with your friends, as well as Guided Games, an option tailored to solo players for when they need to tackle raids.
