Overwatch Joins Activision Blizzard's Billion-Dollar Club

One billion dollars. Dr. Evil would be so proud.

One Billion Dollars. That's how much Overwatch has made in less than a year, according to the latest Activision Blizzard financials and the fastest growing new franchise in the company's history.

The Blizzard shooter joins Call of Duty, Skylanders and World of Warcraft in the exclusive billion-dollar club for the company. Overwatch will not celebrate its one-year anniversary until later this month on May 24. It was revealed late last month that the game had surpassed more than 30 million registered users.

Wonder if It'll become a new pillar. I know it's taking a while to get there but it feels like it might be possible.

What's your definition of a "pillar"? I think it already is if it's making this kind of money. Remains to be seen whether they intend to make sequels or expansions, but I'm guessing they'll just continue to support it with free content and cosmetics since clearly that's working.

Well it used to be Call of Duty, WoW and Skylanders. Well Skylanders took a dump and CoD and WoW numbers are down. I don't think Overwatch is quite hitting the numbers that those three did at an annual basis yet but I bet a sequel might start to hit those CoD numbers.

I think a sequel would be a mistake personally, I'm guessing most of the profit for the game has come from the event-based cosmetics. Making a sequel just shrinks the number of users that are eligible to buy your loot boxes, and if you don't carry over the cosmetics from the first game then people will be hesitant to buy more in the future. It's better off being a single-game franchise with a very long shelf life, maybe with some spin-off titles in other genres.

They'll just keep doing things like Uprising that drive Loot box sales. Hell, they could sell a $30-40 single player expansion and almost every one of those 30 million users would buy it.

Honestly, I feel like Blizzard is the best possible path for a company like Nintendo to take if they went third party. Of course, I would also hope they weren't bought out by Activision but...

Unlimited funds, the power to veto anything that's not working, and the track record and clout necessary for gamers to give them a shot at whatever they try. Makes for a good combination. I mean yeah it's not like it's something you couldn't fuck up but they have this perfect storm of elements and it leads to some good stuff.

They attract really good talent. I mean, Jeff Kaplan came on because he raided with some of the OG Blizzard dudes. That's nuts.

Their CG has been topnotch since ever. I sometimes enjoy their videos more than the games themselves.

HS just crossed 70 mil users - so they'd need an ARPU of ~$14.29 to hit a billion, guess all the F2P players pull it down too much?

I guess. I know most of the revenue for hearthstone is from whales spending hundreds/thousands but averaging ~$15/per user sounds possible.
