Night Trap Remaster Coming to PS4 in All Its Campy FMV Goodness

The remake is a 25th anniversary edition from developer Screaming Villains.

It's been 25 years since the campy "violent" full motion video game Night Trap graced computer screens. A browser game and a failed Kickstarter did little to revive interest in the game, but it appears that publisher Limited Run Games was interested enough in a remaster by developer Screaming Villains to bring Night Trap 25th Anniversary Edition to PS4 sometime later this spring.

The game is basically an interactive movie, and while it won't win any awards for art direction or acting, it appears to stay true to the original schlock of a house full of teenage girls being attacked by vampires. The player is a security guard monitoring the house via closed circuit cameras. The box art will be a "repainting" of the original Sega boxes, available in three varieties.

The original game caused some consternation among the thought police back in 1993 because of its mature and "violent" theme. It was eventually withdrawn from the market, was part of hearings in front of the US Senate, and was one of the games that caused the formation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board. When it was finally rated, it received an M. However, changing cultural norms and the campy nature have revised the rating to T for the 25th anniversary version.

Limited Run did not give a price or release date for the game, although it could shoot for the true 25th anniversary on October 15.

Pure, and udder, nostalgia money grab. You think you remember it being shy of softcore porn. Then you find the footage on Youtube and go... uhhh, THIS is what all the fuss was about? Yup. Modern daytime soaps are far worse.

That's an assumption. I can't stand daytime tv.

Whatever it is you can't stand, it's better than Night Trap. As a kid I only had one friend whose parents had enough money to get him a sega cd, and I told him to get night trap because I heard there was a lot of fuss over it and it might get banned. And he actually got that shit. Even when I was like 11 years old and everything was magical and FMV was amazing, Night Trap was still a steaming turd. This isn't a Simon's Quest situation where you loved the game when it came out but in retrospect after decades maybe it's not too great, in the case of Night Trap it was always terrible.

Probably due to historical relevance. This game and Mortal Kombat lead to the whole moral crusade against video games in the 90s. Parents and politicians lost their shit over the perceived gruesome violence against women in this game (never mind the fact that you are actually trying to save these women).

Anyway yeah it is a terrible game regardless.

I feel like people only think that Night Trap was good until they actually play it again. I mean the only good part of that game is when they sing Night Trap, right?

Loved the original and have played it a few times over the years via emulation, but this isn't necessary.

That's how all women dress for slumber parties.

So violent and erotic that it caused the ESRB's creation! (rated T)

What's hilarious is how terrible the Sega cd fmv compression was back then. 64 colors or less per frame - "awwwww yeahhh check out these hotties , oh wait that's just furniture, they haven't entered the scene yet"

Y'know, if it was cheap enough, and it'd have to be, I'd buy that for a lark. I did play the original for like 3 hours once. Pretty terrible, but the video was amusing at times.
