Mario Kart 8 Deluxe boasts the largest roster of racers ever to rev their engines in Nintendo's perennial kart-racing franchise. All of your old favorites from 2014's Mario Kart 8 on Wii U return, plus characters such as Link that made their debut in DLC expansions. The complete lineup is at your fingertips from the start—with one notable exception: Gold Mario.

Who is Gold Mario?

Gold Mario is a secret, unlockable driver exclusive to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The original Mario Kart 8 on Wii U featured Metal Mario, who shares much in common with his golden brother. Both Marios handle similarly; they even have the same stats, which we provide for you below.

So what's the big deal? Bragging rights. Unlocking Gold Mario is perhaps the greatest challenge the venerable Mario Kart series has ever posed. Adding him to your cast is proof positive that your racing skills are a sight to behold.

How Do I Unlock Gold Mario?

Gold Mario can be yours—if, that is, you're able to earn a gold trophy in every cup on 200cc engine speed. Mario Kart 8 was the first title in the franchise to offer 200cc as a maximum speed. Every other game topped off at 150cc. To win gold in every cup on 200cc, you'll have to exercise pixel-perfect control over your character and come in first on every track, in every cup. Pull that off, and Gold Mario is yours.

What Should I Know Before Attempting 200cc?

The best way to prepare for 200cc is to learn every inch of every course on 150cc. Take time to find a character, as well as a vehicle, wheels, and paraglider that suits your playstyle. Once you feel comfortable with your character and kart combo, start working your way through 200cc. You can play through cups in any order, so get your best ones out of the way first. Going through your strongest cups first will give you a few gold trophies under your belt right off the bat, and hone the skills you'll need to survive 200cc in cups that give you trouble.

What are Gold Mario's Stats?

Gold Mario plays identically to Metal Mario. Still, if you went to the trouble of unlocking him, you might as well flaunt your victory in front of the whole world by playing online.
