Report: BioWare's New IP Mixes Destiny and The Division

Reportedly the unnamed game will finally be unveiled at E3 this year.

Another day, and more news from the bowels of BioWare, this time from north of the border in Edmonton. It appears that BioWare's new IP, which it has been working on for the last four years and teased at E3 2014, will finally get its debut at this year's E3.

This is just a rumor, however, but comes again from Liam Robertson (aka Unseen64), who has broken a few stories before others with his inside sources. His recent podcast, available on his Patreon page, discussed the IP as well as the scope of the project, which is being billed as even bigger than Mass Effect: Andromeda. The IP is dubbed Dylan, which supposedly is the name of the protagonist. That may or may not be the final title.

“Dylan is, from what I understand, a sci-fi themed game," Robertson said (via IBTimes). "It is sort of Destiny-style, takes some elements from The Division, it has like MMO elements. Someone described it as a ‘semi-MMO’. I don’t know much more than that… it is a huge scale project, perhaps the biggest BioWare has ever done. It’s bigger than Mass Effect Andromeda, considerably so. It will have co-op.”

The whole podcast dealt with BioWare, also detailing that the Austin studio was working on a remaster of its classic RPG Knights of the Old Republic, and that the office is now "exclusively" devoted to producing Star Wars content. Keep in mind that this is all speculation, but Robertson has been right before.

The showing at this year's E3 isn't surprising since EA has said that the action-adventure title will come out before March 2018. It will be interesting to see what the new IP holds in terms of story and mechanics. Mass Effect: Andromeda has had a bit of a polarized reception given its animation problems and character portrayals, but decent gameplay. Fans have been growing more unhappy with the storytelling, saying BioWare has lost its edge of the days of Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age. BioWare has a lot to prove, so it had better plan its unveiling carefully with some serious substance and a minimum amount of smoke and mirrors. It needs to impress everyone enough to give the new IP a chance, as its own reputation may not be enough to sustain it any more.

So another online only massively multiplayer action shooter. Yeah, that's really what the market needs another one of.

Seriously, if this report is remotely true it's massively disappointing. I've been resisting agreeing that the Bioware that made great stories is dead, but... ugh. :(

Yeah, it's not looking good for the future of Bioware RPGs.

I loved Destiny and the Division so I'll hold off on hating this until I hear more about it. I love online coop shooters and ME3's online was pretty decent for that.
