Despite only being out for only 12 days in February, Ubisoft's multiplayer slash-fest For Honor was the top selling game for the month, according to the NPD group's latest video game report. And Playstation 4 continued to best the Xbox One in overall sales for the fifth month in a row.
For Honor, which released on February 14, was the top-selling game on all platforms, followed by January's top seller, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The only other new game to break the top 10 was Team Ninja's PS4-exclusive Nioh, debuting at number 9 solely on the strength of shelf sales, as no digital numbers were included.
For Honor and RE7 held the top spots for both PS4 and Xbox One, with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Grand Theft Auto 5 and NBA 2K17 rounding out the top five on Xbox One. GTA 5, Nioh and NBA 2K17 round out the top five for PlayStation 4.
Super Smash Bros. continued to hold the Wii U top spot, while Poochy and Yoshi's Wooly World took monthly top honors for handhelds.
On the hardware side, PlayStation 4 continued its mastery over the Xbox One, with the 500GB model bundled with Uncharted 4 grabbing the top package spot. PS4 has held the top spot since passing Xbox One in October last year.
Console sales in general, however, slipped dramatically. “Total hardware spending in February declined 30 percent versus February 2016 to $204M," Riley said. "Console hardware accounted for 82 percent of the total declines as both average retail pricing and units sold fell versus year ago.”
Overall, “Spending on software, hardware and accessories for February 2017 reached $724M, a decline of 21 percent versus prior year," NPD analyst David Riley said. "Spending declined across hardware, software and accessories.”
NPD is also tracking 12-month sales. The top five best-selling games across all platforms covering March 2016 to February 2017 are (in order) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1, NBA 2K17, The Division, and Madden NFL 17.
John Keefer posted a new article, For Honor Was the Top-Selling Game in February, NPD Says
Good! That game surprised me with its awesomeness. I'd be playing a lot more if Horizon Zero Dawn didn't steal all my time.
Cool but that seems to have died pretty quickly
Only the for the faint of heart.
