For Honor's future DLC maps and modes will be free

The caveat is that it may not extend to new heroes.

The silence around For Honor is starting to subside, which is good, given that the game is supposed to be out on Valentine's Day. What will happen after release with regard to DLC is still unknown, but at least we now know maps and modes will be free.

"We don't want to split the community," game director Damien Kieken told Eurogamer during a presentation of the game. "So everything that's matchmade [including] new modes and new maps, will be given for free to the players. We'll also have other free content. We are a big team supporting the game after launch."

Notice the caveat "everything that's matchmade." This could mean that the game could collow a Rainbow Six Siege model where maps and modes are free, but heroes will cost extra or possibly be part of a Season Pass. Another unknown that will probably be answered closer to launch.

There will be monetization in the game, such as allowing players to buy more in-game currency called Steel. "It's just a shortcut," Kieken said Everything is unlockable just by playing the game. And all shortcuts are tied to progression, so you can't unlock an end-game item right away."

The game will launch with 12 maps. A closed beta for the game is scheduled for next month, reveolving around the faction war between Knights, Samurai and Vikings. Registration has already started.
