New Nintendo 3DS price drops to below $100 for Black Friday 2016

Shopping for a New Nintendo 3DS this holiday season but can only spend $100? Then Nintendo has your back this Black Friday.

Nintendo has announced it will offer two special-edition Nintendo 3DS models starting on November 25th that will bring the popular handheld below $100 for the first time ever.

The New special-edition Nintendo 3DS models will come in either black or white and will feature Mushroom Kingdom characters and imagery. The images include various iconic items and enemies, such as a Yoshi egg, a Bullet Bill, Mario himself, and more.

“Nintendo has some of the best gifts for the holiday season,” said Nintendo of America senior vice president of sales and marketing Doug Bowser. “Whether you’re looking for games for the whole family, or a cool new system at a great value, Nintendo has you covered.”

To keep the price as low as possible, this special-edition Nintendo 3DS doesn’t come with any pre-loaded software. Instead, those who purchase it are encouraged to load it up with some games from the platform’s library, which includes Pokemon Sun and Moon, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Yo-kai Watch 2.

Damn, I wasn't expecting to pick up the "new" version anytime soon, but this might force my hand.

I really don't need a "new" 3DS with the Switch coming out, but that is an extremely appealing price. Wow.

Yeah, the New 3DS is an excellent piece of hardware and there are TONS of great games out right now. I might have to pick one of these up for my son because that's a hard price to turn down. It's getting close to the price of the 2DS which is a far inferior device.

What games are you liking recently? I loved Fire Emblem Awakening and Etrian Odyssey 4, but I haven't paid attention since. I might revive the 3DS for in-flight entertainment.

Well if you've never owned a 3DS, there are dozens of great games to play which most likely won't be ported to Switch.

But I already have the original 3DS, so I don't need the "new" one, especially since not many games utilize the "newness". But I wanted to get one eventually since it's 3D effect is easier to maintain, and the screen is bigger than the original 3DS.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have an XL already and wouldn't pick up any of the games that require it. But i forgot that the 3d effect is greatly improved as well. Hopefully they all sell out instantly and I won't be tempted.

I'll sadly be at GameStop at midnight, like I was for my Zelda edition 3DS:

It runs faster, and is more responsive. Games load faster, and the OS is faster too.

The new CPU is the best reason to get one, might as well have full compatibility since there are a small number of exclusive games.

Can the old, original DS play most of the current games?

Wife just found our old DS's in a box. We're charging them now to see if they still work. I don't remember that it has any kind of online store, so it's cart only. But, I'm not sure if the newer carts are only compatible with the new system?

Yes, you can swap the front and back plates on the regular sized New 3DS.

Yeah, swappable faceplates in North America and Europe are unique to the non-XL *New* 3DS.

I think Japan had them on a mid-run variant of the regular 3DS as well, but other territories just got it with the New ones.

With the older 3DSes the XL was a smart move as the 3D "sweet spot" was larger, but with the improved 3D effect I'm not sure there's any functional difference between the two.

Because of that were I to get a New one I'd probably just get the regular size. Especially at $100.

Yeah, I'm wondering though if the quality is equal when you're at the "sweet spot". Like, I wonder if they had to make any sacrifices to the 3D for it to work from more angles. In my understanding the camera tracks your eyes and adjusts the screen in real time, so that wouldn't seem to make picture quality suffer, but I don't have any hands-on experience.

You sure? I don't think they ever released the small version in the US. I think we only have the XL version, which they don't label as XL because it's our only version.

Cool, well now I'm not sure if I want this deal. I kinda want the New 3DS XL since I have the standard size original 3DS. Use the New one for home play, the old, small one for travel.

My gf has the new small and I have the new XL. I like the larger size for comfort and since I play it at home mostly.

The smaller one has really nice perks. Different faceplates that look really nice, the screen is a lot sharper at native size, and more portable since it's smaller.
