Although Madden topped the charts, interest in this year's edition slipped compared to last year's.

Madden NFL 17, No Man's Sky, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided took the top three spots in the list of best-selling games for the month of August, according to NPD Group.

NPD Group ranks their top-10 list in terms of dollar sales rather than numbers of units sold, the entity's previous metric. Despite NPD Group not factoring in digital sales for last month's crop of titles, No Man's Sky reached the number-two spot.

Grand Theft Auto 5 and Overwatch slipped from their lofty positions, although, again, NPD did not factor digital sales into its earnings.

While analysts found that spending rose by nine percent year-over-year, interest in Madden dropped compared to last summer's edition. "Madden NFL 17 was the top-selling game for the month," Naji said. "However, there was a three percent decline in spending compared to last August release of Madden NFL 16," according to NPD analyst Sam Naji.

As previously announced,Xbox One outsold PS4 for the second month in a row. "Thanks to our fans and their excitement for new Xbox One games and the recently launched Xbox One S, which is the only console available this holiday with built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming, and HDR for video and gaming, Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in August," said Xbox marketing chief Mike Nichols when the news broke last week.
