Sony is distributing invitations to PlayStation Meeting, a press event scheduled for September 7 at 3 pm Eastern at New York City's PlayStation Theater.

Per the invitation, Sony plans to "share details about the PlayStation business" at the meeting. With PSVR locked in for release, it's likely that the manufacturer will unveil PlayStation Neo, an upgraded PS4 sporting better graphical and processing capabilities.

Sony insists that PS4 owners won't be left out in the cold, however. PS4 Neo will sport better hardware, but Sony requires publishers to make their games compatible across both levels of hardware. Meaning, publishers cannot engineer games specifically for Neo or vanilla PS4.

Recent rumors point to Sony releasing Neo by the end of this year. Meanwhile, Microsoft is banking on Xbox One S to gain some ground in the console business. The Xbox One will receive a proper hardware upgrade, codenamed Scorpio, in 2017.
