Darksiders: Warmastered Edition revealed for late October release

We were wrong. It's not remastered ... It's WARmastered!

Nordic Games revealed last week that it was going to remaster the original Darksiders, but didn't offer many details. Luckily, we didn't have to wait long, as the game gets a massive facelift on all platforms, and will be coming out on October 25.

Dubbed the Warmastered Edition, the updated game will include:

  • PS4, Xbox One and Wii U versions of Darksiders (Wrath of War)
  • Native 1080p rendering resolution for console platforms
  • 4k support and additional video options for PC
  • Doubled all the texture resolutions
  • Rendering improvements and rework
  • Better shadow rendering quality
  • Post processing effects
  • 60 FPS in moment to moment gameplay on PS4, Xbox One, and PC;  30 FPS on WiiU)

This version of the game is being developed by Kaiko, which has previously assisted Nordic with the Xbox One Version of Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition and Legend of Kay Anniversary edition.

The info released last week apparently caught the PR and marketing team by surprise. "We had a short-lived epidemic of premature emancipation, causing the affected persons to burp out sensitive info a little sooner than planned” joked Philipp Brock, PR & Marketing Director at Nordic Games in the press release, “but after a minor surgery and some medication, we got it all under control.”

The game will sell for $19.99 on all platforms.

Damn that sounds really good, I love the franchise and will pick this up for sure.

I really hope they are working on #3, just not sure if the original team will work on it.

Only if it has co-op and none of that loot drop non-sense.

Man, a DarkSiders 3 with co-op would be SO EPIC.

I thought the rumors were 3 was going to be the last two horsemen, together. Sounds like coop to me! Of course, this was before the bankruptcy.

This. And better level design than 2, similar to 1

Since I am a ARPG junkie for me personally DS2 was my fav, I hope they keep the loot.

I will get 3 no matter what though with loot or without I love both games and am cool with either style.

1 is a classic though there is no doubt about that.

Just curious do you dislike Diablo 3, Torchlight series, WOW, or any games that have a loot system? What was the beef about the loot in Darksiders 2?

As someone who didn't care for the loot in the second game, I can say it just didn't fit. It didn't add anything to the game. When you're just picking up junk 95% of the time what's the point? It doesn't change the way you play, it only adds the tedium of reading stats. They could have had five different weapons that were all unique and purposeful, and mechanically that would have trumped the hundreds of randomly named weapons you'll throw away in D2.

It was such a wasted opportunity to focus on the weaker parts of D1, and continually improve what was good. D2 had very weak environmental puzzles compared to the first game, and the combat is made worse through the added RPG elements.

Why it works for Diablo, versus a Darksiders game is that Diablo's progression is centered around your character getting stronger which happens when you collect loot, and the game has hooks that feed into that. Darksiders progression happens as you advance the story. Weather you collect the loot or not isn't important as it only affects the game's difficulty. It's harder until you get an often random weapon that puts everything on easy mode. Diablo expects you to grind out these weapons, and the game and it's combat are tuned to that experience. If you aren't equipped properly in Diablo, you'll just hit a wall where you can't progress until you've equipped yourself to the point where you're on par with the enemies you're facing. Any finesse or complication in combat goes out the window when you can get a weapons and armor that allows you to eschew skill for better numbers.
