E3 2016: Phantom Dust Remastered rises from the ashes

It's not the reboot that was hoped, but at least it is an update.

Microsoft had teased a reboot of the 2004 game Phantom Dust in 2014, but after developer Darkside Games was shut down, it was thought the game was done. However, it now looks like the game will be coming, not as a reboot, but as a remaster for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.

The action strategy game will utilize Microsoft's just announced Play Anywhere functionality and Xbox Live's new Arena system. Microsoft’s Shannon Loftis said the game will use assets from the original 2004 Xbox game. It will be released some time in 2017.

The orginal was created by Panzer Dragoon director Yukio Futatsugi, and developed quite a following after its release. The buzz was strong after the reboot was announced, but quickly faded after Darkside's demise. Hopefully the remaster can recapture some of the excitement the original created.
