The Chatty is a community full of some very talented people. One of our very own Shackers, Rampancy, and his development studio Marauder Interactive have pushed out their game House of the Dying Sun to Steam Early Access today. The game is an action-packed single player space shooter that supports Oculus Rift and HTC Vive for a more immersive VR experience. I captured some gameplay footage of the game running on the HTC Vive. Please take a look.

House of the Dying Sun is available here on Steam Early Access. Check out their website here for more information.

While the way inertial cockpit freelook in non-VR is is a little funky at first, it does appear to be working when one holds (L-)Shift.

Also I cleared another two missions.

So is seated experience pretty good on Vive? Do you have any trouble making sure your chair is within your lighthouse play space? No recalibration needed?

      • reply
        June 7, 2016 4:07 PM

I didn't have to do anything to switch from room scale to seated experience. It just worked.

I have said for awhile that if you have the disposable income and want to experience high quality virtual reality that the Vive is a great purchase.

        June 7, 2016 4:52 PM

In most seated games you just sit down and play and it should work. Most games like elite have a key as well that will recalibrate your new position if it changes.

The box and I have to work with the Rift has been sent through to you by tomorrow night and day of the other unscheduled idle. The only thing that has been a bit more than happy to do it all was the first one. It has to do so may significantly shorten the battery's life.

      There.

What's with the weird landscape that shows up for a split second on loading? Is that a VR settings thing? I was a tester of the game and never saw that.

That's my SteamVR environment, what I see when I'm not in a game. In some games you see it during loading screens, especially Oculus games running in Revive. I can't remember if I saw that in HotDS, it might have just been in the capture window.

Also the environment is super fun to customize. There's already a ton of community content.

Are people using mouse and keyboard to play? Since flight sticks aren't recommended For me i think m +k would be my preference over a controller for flying. Like descent!

      • reply
        June 8, 2016 12:36 AM

Mouse and keyboard works great, I've put two hours into it so far, all of it on m+kb.

I'm actually starting to wonder how controllers work with it. I may break out my 360 and Steam controllers tomorrow.

        June 8, 2016 1:11 AM

M/K works well. You actually can use a stick, you just have to set it up yourself. I prefer a controller, though.

      • reply
        June 8, 2016 1:31 AM

I would think a flight stick would work just fine, may need some manual setup and configuration.

The mouse control almost emulates the feeling of stick as far as pitch and yaw go. You have a center dead zone you can configure the size of, and once you move the reticule outside of that, you start to turn in that direction. It's pretty neat, almost exactly what I was picturing the other day: http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=35039993#item_35039993

I'm still gonna try a gamepad for a while to see what the vibration / feedback is like.

        June 8, 2016 6:05 AM

The UI isn't captured by the VR companion window. The background blurs when the UI comes up, but you just aren't seeing that.

      • reply
        June 8, 2016 6:05 AM

I think it's when the briefcase man opens the HUD overlay to command his fleet. It doesn't appear to be captured correctly, but you can see it in other YouTube videos and it has that effect of slowing down time.

        • reply
          June 8, 2016 7:18 AM

Yeah for whatever reason the UI that runs on the overlay in VR has never captured right. :/

It looks OK in game though!
