Overwatch animated short gives Soldier: 76 the spotlight

Gee, you'd think the game was launching tomorrow or something.

Just in time for the Overwatch launch tomorrow, Blizzard has released its latest animated short, focusing this time on sometime hero and piss-poor driver Soldier: 76. And possibly the origins of the mysterious Sombra?

First, let's watch the video, which is set in Dorado, and gives us a glimpse of Jack Morrison, aka Soldier: 76, and his abilities.

There had been speculation that we would see Soldier: 76 and Sombra in this latest short, given all the evidence, but while we don't get the character in costume, given the backstory laid out before the young girl meets Soldier: 76, this could be the groundwork for Sombra to maybe be revealed sometime after launch.

Of course, Blizzard is quite mum on the subject. Even gameplay designer Michael Chu was relatively coy on the subject, telling Eurogamer that all the speculation was odd. "I don't actually know where particularly it came from," he said. "I know I read about the French theatre-chain poster thing. The community was really expecting - or had ideas that there might be - a new hero revealed, but no..."

Misdirection is always good PR, so I wouldn't be surprised is Sombra shows up sometime soon.

If you can't get enough of the Overwatch hype, the game will be featured tonight on Conan's Clueless Gamer segment with Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey squaring off. And then we do have all of these guides for the game as well.
