Activision responds to hate for Call of Duty Infinite Warfare trailer

Company says pre-orders are off to a strong start.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is blasting off into space on November 4, but the reveal trailer for the game has received a ton of down votes on YouTube - more than 450,000 so far, and double the number of upvotes. The issue was brought up during an Activision earnings call, and CEO Eric Hirshberg said he understood the passion of the fans.

"This is an industry like no other and a fan base like no other," he said in response to a question about the negativity. "We love that our fans treat this franchise like their own and have such strong points of view about it. There just aren't many entertainment franchises on earth that can generate the kind of passion that Call of Duty can... and that's a good thing. Secondly, of course, we know there are people in our community who are nostalgic for the boots on the ground-style gameplay; that's why we made Modern Warfare Remastered. But we also have millions of people in our community who want to have new innovative experiences in the game each year and Infinite Warfare is going to deliver that."

Negative reaction to the video seems to be a two-fold. Many are upset that the game is taking a more futuristic jump that previous CoD games, even drawing some comparisons to Star Wars and Halo. Others are frustrated that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered will not be available separately, but only as part of a package with Infinite Warfare that will cost extra.

Hirshberg chose to focus on the positive. "While of course we see the passionate opinions online, we also look at other measurements and the fact is — while it's very early — pre-orders are off to a very strong start, he said. "Views of the reveal trailer ... are up and, in fact, the number of likes per view on the Infinite Warfare trailer are the highest we've ever seen. We've seen this in the franchise before. The reveal trailer for Black Ops 2, which took the franchise into the future for the first time, had the most dislikes of any reveal trailer we had ever made at that time. And that went on to become our most successful game ever."

He also said the complaints will not deter the company or the franchise. "What we know for sure is that if we always just did what worked in the past and never took any creative risks, we wouldn't have a franchise. The day to worry is the day we stop trying new things."

I mean, he's right. Plus, I like the futuristic shit. Advanced Warfare had problems, but the exos weren't it, and BLOPS3 was fun as balls until Destiny grabbed 'em.

Is the joke here that CoD never changes? Because that's not really true... each new entry for the most part introduces some new concept to shake things up. The core gameplay stays but ... its an online shooter.

I think for people, there is an idea of the core of games. Much like BF fans would never like it if a BF released without conquest and might even take issue if the new announcement is too far from somewhat realistic combined arms.

I think for many gamers, COD is COD4: Modern Warfare. When you deviate too far from that they think it is COD in name only.

Personally, I think COD died with COD5: World at War. That was the last time COD looked anything like the war movie ripoff games I learned to love on PC. Haven't bought a COD in 8 years. Apparently for the people who liked the MW2, Black Ops, and Ghosts direction...this is too far.

I come close to agreeing, but I think they did some really notable things in COD4 and 5. I think COD:UO is still the pinnacle of COD MP though. COD 5 could have done it, but they botched the vehicles too much.

That was the golden age of PC MP games. Mix of COD:OU, BF 1942, RTCW MP, Enemy Territory MP. So diverse and all so good.

TF2 and FEAR weren't too far out of there either. I was also loading up Chivalry and Insurgency as mods during that era.

Me neither, I'm not a huge fan of CoD games and I'm struggling to get through Black Ops 2 but I thought this one look pretty cool.

I am way more interested in the COD 4 remaster than the new game. Release that shit as a standalone for $20 and I am there!

Man I am glad you posted about this.

First I have to say I am not a massive COD fan boy, and no I don't hate the franchise. Having said that out of all the COD games that have been released I will never understand why anyone would complain about this release its crazy!?

The fact that they are packaging Modern Warfare remake(yes pre order only) which looks amazing btw https://twitter.com/valcan_s/status/727284222293987329 with the modern COD game that they keeps on changing and evolving in their own way and people still bitch is INSANE!

I mean come on you get two games for two different crowds and style in one package but that is still not good enough? I seriously don't know what people want, if you don't like COD fine then don't play it but if you do this would be probably the best version in the series considering you get both games.

As for the little issue that Modern Warefare remake is pre order only well yeah $59 for a game is a drop in the bucket for all the years of work it takes. Again either you want to support the developer like their games or you don't.

I hate to bring this up but if people are cool with buying concept space ship drawings for hundreds or dollars what is the big deal to pre order a game or pay $10 more for a game so you get two full games that are complete and you will be able to play this year?

Seems like hating just for the sake of hating cause its COD. I am getting it and pre ordering it.

My big worry about doing that for the COD4 remake is that it will be matchmaking only and that doesn't interest me.

I don't really have a problem with the space setting it seems interesting. But it does suck that I can't just buy Modern Warfare as it would be nice to replay.
