Oculus to put Rift demos in 48 Best Buy stores starting May 7

Limited quantities will be on sale at the stores and online from Amazon and Microsoft beginning May 6.

Oculus has had a bumpy time of late with its delayed shipment to backers of its Kickstarter campaign. However, the company is undaunted, moving ahead with a launch through some retail outlets this weekend.

On its official blog, Oculus revealed that the Rift will be part of the Intel Experience at 48 Best Buys around the United States starting on May 7. It promises that later this summer, more Best Buy locations will be added. In addition, Oculus says an "extremely limited" number of Rifts will be available for purchase at Best Buy and online through Microsoft and Amazon on May 6 starting at 9 a.m. PT. Oculus is focused on filling its backlogged pre-orders, but the company wants to get some extra units out to people willing to pay for them. Of course, if you can't wait for your pre-order, Oculus will let you buy it retail and still keep the pre-order benefits, such as like the EVE: Valkyrie Founder’s Pack and priority status for Touch pre-orders.

"Starting May 6th, if you’re interested, simply go to your order status and let us know you’ve purchased a Rift at retail, and we’ll cancel your pre-order. Your EVE: Valkyrie entitlement will appear in your order history," the site says.

As part of the in-store experience, Oculus is showing demos of Dreamdeck and The Climb. Farlands will be added in the coming weeks.

Oculus has introduced Oculus Live so people can find the store closest to them that will be doing demos. If you live in Canada or Europe, Oculus said it is working to bring demos to those areas this fall.

Actually very excited about this. Haven't been able to experience this generation of VR yet.

How many cases of pinkeye are attributable to VR demos? I am just curious. I have been hearing a lot about this lately.

I think that was a rumor that got started at PAX last year, but not sure if it was ever confirmed.

It was a real enough concern in 2014 that mid-show many folks started to use cleaning wipes between each demo, which is now pretty much standard practice.

I don't think I met anyone who was actually affected, but there were media folks who for sure did VR demos who then wrote in their articles mentioning that they got something.

You know, I bet they actually did help you there.

Also, any chance ShackNews HMDs might be coming to ShackCon? Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes works fine on a laptop screen, but I haven't made the plunge into VR yet... though I also have no idea how it will run on my laptop in VR.

Sounds like Nitrium is driving and kbnerd, if attending, is nearby. Not sure what kind of PCs they're sporting though.

Hmm, in Keep Talking I am getting solid 60 (seems to cap there in non-VR mode) at 1080x2 with 4x AA, so I'm suspecting that Keep Talking may work fine even off my laptop (which makes sense as they originally demoed it from laptops). Nothing else will, but...

What is the point of having VR at Shackcon without Roomscale? :P

Far be it from me to argue against going all the way with it, room scale is amazing and I hope more people get to experience the awe.

I just wanted to make sure that worst case we could still diffuse bombs with an HMD off my laptop.

now if they'd only release software (game) demos, or 360 3D screenshots, or have a game refund policy for current customers.

If it works like Steam they'll lock you out of the account entirely for doing a chargeback.

no, this is not a big fuck you to people waiting. this is likely a contract that was penned long before preorders even started.

That is a complete guess on your side and even if its true they probably shouldn't have signed contracts guaranteeing units before knowing demand. The fact that they were going to have a lot of pre-orders wasn't a complete surprise.

They have! Back on April 15 or so. This is separate, parallel fulfillment from your orders.
