Ubisoft and EA fight over 'Ghost' trademark

What's next? Someone attempting to trademark 'React'?

Late last week, Ubisoft Entertainment and Ubisoft Inc. contacted the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in an attempt to stop EA from trademarking the word “Ghost.”

EA is currently attempting to trademark the term as it currently is the name of its in-house development studio, Ghost. The studio is best known for its work on Need For Speed Rivals, and the recent Need For Speed reboot. Ubisoft filed the notice of opposition against EA’s trademark application as the company believes its Ghost Recon trademark, which was acquired as early as 2001, will be damaged as a result.

The notice of opposition was actually filed in August 2015, but was recently discovered by NeoGAF members. EA has until March 9 to respond to Ubisoft’s notice.
