Activision and FreestyleGames have been issuing frequent updates to Guitar Hero Live since its October release. Now the time has come for a big feature update, one that's going to go beyond simply adding new songs. The big highlight for this free update will be a GHTV feature called Rival Challenges.

Rival Challenges will open up for anyone at level 10 or higher, which is the point that players will have unlocked a number of the game's Hero Powers. Those eligible will find a special Rival Challenge song come up twice during each half-hour block across each of GHTV's streaming channels, which will momentarily offer up some competitive multiplayer action. Players will be paired up against opponents of relative skill level and whoever comes out on top will receive a +100 Status XP bonus.

The Rival Challenges mode will debut in Guitar Hero Live today. Freestyle isn't going home for the holidays just yet, as the studio is noting that holiday-themed GHTV shows are set to debut soon.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
