Konami contractually barred Metal Gear Solid 5 director Hideo Kojima from attending The Game Awards, according to host and producer Geoff Keighley.

MGS5 won best Action/Adventure game at the awwards, but actor Keifer Sutherland accepted on behalf of Kojima, drawing attention to the director's absence. Keighley, addressed the elephant in the room head-on by explaining that Kojima had every intention of coming, but Konami's lawyers informed him that he would be unable to.

The host didn't go into detail regarding the terms of the contract that would prevent Kojima from accepting his award, but the tone was certainly negative. Most recently, Konami claimed that Hideo Kojima hadn't left the company at all, but was merely on vacation.

“As you noticed, Kojima is not here with us tonight and I want to tell you a little about that. Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight, but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight’s awards ceremony to accept any awards. [crowd boos] He’s still under an employment contract. And it’s disappointing and it’s inconceivable to me that an artist like Hideo would not be allowed to come here and celebrate with his peers and his fellow teammates.”

It's baffling to me that that could even be enforceable.

They still owe him money and he doesn't want to fuck it up for a dumb award.

This is so bizarre. I want to believe it's an elaborate Kojima ruse, but it all seems a bit too much to be a prank.

These are the people who removed all mention of Kojima from everything under their control including the box art for MGSV. I would hazard to guess that all the mission credits that freeze frame on Kojima's name were his response.

        It seems rather personal now.

Did he screw his boss's wife or something? Sounds like Konami is punishing him for something, but due to his value to the company unable to just kick him out.

      Pretty ridiculous.

Still, it's Kojima's responsibility to sign sensible contracts. Lesson learned, I'm sure.

It's very likely that your own employment contract has many clauses that can be horribly abused given sufficiently expensive lawyers and Konami has sufficiently expensive lawyers.

Konami just didn't want him ruining his "vacation". It's actually pretty thoughtful of them.
