Overwatch may be headed to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One [Update]

On the eve of Blizzcon, we're seeing a lot of proof that hints at Overwatch making its way to consoles.

Update: A Blizzard statement to Game Informer reads: "We are excited to share more information about Overwatch with everyone at BlizzCon this weekend - so be sure to tune in to the opening ceremonies for free at www.BlizzCon.com." That's neither an explicit confirmation, nor a denial. Stay tuned tomorrow, as we all find out more together!

Original story: BlizzCon is taking place tomorrow, but today we’re learning Blizzard might be bringing its upcoming team-based shooter, Overwatch, to consoles.

There have been a number of hints pop up online regarding a possible console release for the game. The first piece of evidence includes the results of data mining its beta, which included strings of code that uses authentication checks on both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. The inclusion of controller support for the PC version, the game’s overall user-friendly interface, and Blizzard’s European website briefly stating the game was coming to console continue to add fuel to this rumor fire.

The last piece of evidence to this claim is the fact that some fans are already spotting pre-order notices at their local GameStop. Unfortunately, there are no images of these notices and the GameStop website doesn’t have them either, although we’re hoping what users are reporting turn out to be true.

This wouldn't be the first time Blizzard developed a game for consoles as the company successfully launched Diablo III on consoles. Overwatch seems like an obvious fit for console release, so we're hoping Blizzard is ready to make its big announcement during this weekend's BlizzCon.

Also I'm not real happy about Star Wars battlefront opening the door on $60 multiplayer only. ($100 actually though lol) I'd still like to see some effort on single player, but with that and now Overwatch I can see a whole slate of these popping up. The flood gates are open. I still like single player story driven campaigns in FPSs. I know both of these games will have great multi but I still feel like we're letting them off the hook.

Full-price multiplayer-only games have existed since...Tribes. Possibly longer. This isn't a new concept, or an unwelcome one if they have enough content.

I don't understand why people want a shitty tacked on single player to a multiplayer focused game.

Why not just do one or the other really well instead of making subpar versions of both in one package?

The Star Wars theme is enough to fool people into it

That's really all there is. It's an exceptional Star Wars façade without anything interesting.

Apparently that is enough for a lot of people so all power to them but I don't really get it.

It not being F2P is the bigger news item IMO, everybody expected F2P.

Yeah. Seems and odd decision since both systems support F2P

Wouldn't surprise me, their consistent/simple FPS controls map perfectly to controllers.

Not really. The mechanics of some characters and the map design wouldn't work well at all on a controller in it's current state.

Things like Tracer or Lucio's movement, Pharah's quick vertical rocket boost, Winstons leap, etc.

Also the verticality and openness of the maps would be really detrimental on a console where situational awareness is so much lower. Even on PC it can be infuriating as enemies can approach from so many angles and heights that it's impossible to keep track, I can only imagine it would be 1000x worse with a controller.

That isn't to say they can't adjust things to make it work, maybe they can (or maybe not), but as it is now it wouldn't translate very well at all.

It's fun. The core gameplay and class mechanics are fun and easily approachable.

However, it suffers the same things as most moba's do in that the experience is incredibly dependent on your teammates.

If you have even one teammate who refuses to play a class that is useful it can completely ruin the experience. If you end up on a team that refuses to play tanks / supports then the game becomes downright unbearable. I don't think there will ever be a solution to this but I hope that match making (and maybe a ranked mode) will improve it dramatically. As it is right now there are far too many players who refuse to play anything except their pet class which can really ruin things.

Yep. And the people who usually complain most and loudest about the team make up refuse to switch from their own favorite class to something else and actually help out. It's hilarious :P

We could really use a tank here, but I'm going to play the third Widowmaker.

Those people always seem to be playing Widowmaker or Tracer. It's uncanny.

Tracer is by far my favorite class and I don't think I've played her in a pub since the first or second day of beta.

All the time. In fact I enjoy playing most of the classes.

I particularly enjoy Lucio (who is required to be even close to competitive) and most of the staple DPS classes. I also like playing most of the tanks (assuming someone capable is on support) when needed.

There are of course times when I really feel like playing X class but only when it's in a situation that it makes sense and doesn't fuck my team. Also, I will always swap if my class isn't working out or the team comp is in desperate need of one particular thing.
