August NPD: PS4 still leads Xbox One while Nintendo passes 7 million Amiibo sold

The console wars are starting to get one-sided again with PS4 declating victory over Xbox One on the strength of the mighty Madden. Meanwhile, Nintendo still sits in a distant third-place, but appears to be content with skyrocketing Amiibo sales.

The fall season is about to hit, but first, there's the matter of wrapping up the summer. And for the month of August, Sony has emerged victorious once again. The PlayStation 4 has outsold the Xbox One for the fourth month in a row, continuing to outpace the Xbox One, largely on the strength of Madden NFL 16. It was a down month overall for physical gaming sales, with software sales down 10 percent from this time a year ago.

Speaking of software, Madden NFL 16 led a slow month of August overall. While Microsoft came to the plate with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Rare Replay, they just managed to come away with the third and sixth spots, respectively. Surprisingly, Minecraft continues to sell like hotcakes, coming away with second place on the strength of the old-gen console versions. Of course, given that Microsoft owns the Minecraft IP, perhaps this wasn't such a bad month for Xbox, after all.

Meanwhile, one might wonder what's happened to third-place Nintendo? Well, Nintendo is also laughing all the way to the bank, because another NPD report released earlier today (courtesy of Venture Beat) notes that while Wii U consoles may not be selling in high numbers, the publisher has sold over 7 million Amiibo figures since the month of November. That number is only set to grow with another set of the figures set to release this Friday alongside Super Mario Maker.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I'm really glad to read that Until Dawn made the top 10 list. I played it 3 times in one weekend and figured most ppl would just rent it (it's so good!). On amiibos-I'm calling in sick tomorrow and waiting outside Toys R Us @ 5am to get my hands on Bowser Jr and Dr. Mario...it better happen. I love them, and hate them.

Me too! I absolutely LOVED the game. My girlfriend and I were both playing, nearly at the same pace but leapfrogging each other (alternating playtime on my PS4) and it was interesting to see the different choices we both made. I had only Chris and Jessica die, while she had everybody but Sam die. Very entertaining, for sure.
