For PS4 owners that have pre-ordered their copy of Street Fighter V, their beta begins tonight at 6PM PT.

Update: The Street Fighter V beta has not exactly gotten off to a smooth start. Numerous users have had troubles getting into games, reporting connectivity issues and unresponsive black screens. As a result, it appears that Capcom will be extending the beta period beyond its July 28 end date.

Original story: It's been a fantastic week for fighting games, culminating with the Ultra Street Fighter IV finals at EVO 2015. But now it's time to look ahead to what's next and Capcom is getting ready to release Street Fighter V. A key part of the path towards that release is ensuring the online component works, which is why the beta is kicking off tonight.

For this online-only beta, players can select between Ryu, Chun-Li, M. Bison, and Nash. That roster will expand to include Birdie and Cammy this weekend. Matchmaking will be completely random. There are no friend invites and there is no location tracking, meaning it's very possible to get connected with users in Japan. Peter 'Combofiend' Rosas indicates on the Capcom-Unity blog that this will not be the case with the final product, but the current setup will allow Capcom to test connections globally.

Capcom will also refine the beta as it goes along, bringing it down between the hours of 11PM and 1AM PT daily.

For those that have pre-ordered Street Fighter V, the beta begins tonight at 6PM PT for all PlayStation 4 owners and will run from tonight through July 28. As for PC owners, their beta will begin this fall. For more on Street Fighter V, be sure to check out our full interview from EVO 2015 with Combofiend and Matt Dahlgren.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I wasn't able to get on at all tonight, though a few friends were briefly.

I'm not at all upset. This is exactly what they were testing for.

It's shitty to go out and drive preorders with this thing and then have it completely fail to function for the first day. This is where the marketing department co-opting the term "beta" -- when what they're actually selling is a prerelease demo -- becomes a problem.

They should at least extend the beta period by however long it takes them to get it working.

On the other hand, if people really feel jilted by this, it comes early enough that they can send a message by canceling their pre-order.

A beta is a beta, IMO its the user's fault if they don't understand what that means. I have a lot to bitch about with Capcom in general, but they're doing this correctly.

Beta servers broke. Good, now hopefully it won't happen on launch day.

And yes, they have extended the beta. It was at the top of the story before I posted.

Now if it does happen on launch day, then there's a huuuuuge problem.
